To check now, open More (⋮) > Help > About Google Chrome, then select Relaunch if Chrome offers it. The update controls differ on Mac, Linux, Chromebooks, and mobile devices.
Update Chrome on Windows, Mac, or Linux
- Open Google Chrome.
- Select More (⋮) > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Leave the About page open while Chrome checks for an update. If an update is ready, select Relaunch to finish installing it. If there is no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is already up to date.
Google says desktop Chrome checks regularly and normally applies an available update when you close and reopen the browser. A pending update may also appear in the toolbar; use its offered relaunch action or close and reopen Chrome. Ordinary tabs and windows reopen after a restart, but Incognito windows do not. Mac: check the all-users setting
On a Mac, Google documents an Automatically update Chrome for all users option on the About page when Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. If that option is available, check it to enable updates for all users of that installation.
Linux: use your package manager
Linux Chrome updates are handled through the package manager, rather than a separate browser auto-update switch. Check the update controls for the package manager and Linux distribution you use.

Update Chrome on a Chromebook
On a Chromebook, Chrome browser updates come with ChromeOS. Check for and install ChromeOS updates through the device’s system update settings; the desktop Chrome menu is not a separate browser auto-update control. Google’s Chrome update guidance covers Chromebook updates.
Set automatic updates on Android and iPhone or iPad
On mobile, Chrome updates come through the device’s app store. Whether they install automatically depends on the app-store update settings. If automatic app updates are disabled, install an available Chrome update manually.

Android
Open Google Play, tap your account profile, and check Chrome under app updates. Install an available update, and review Google Play’s automatic-update settings if you want apps to update automatically.
iPhone or iPad
Open the App Store, tap your account profile, and check Chrome under available updates. Install an available update, and review the App Store’s automatic-update settings if you want apps to update automatically. Google’s Chrome update page explains that mobile updates are delivered through the app store.

If Chrome says an administrator controls updates
A work or school device may be managed by Chrome Enterprise policies. Administrators can control update behavior and timing, target versions or release channels, and manage relaunch notifications. If an update option is unavailable or Chrome says an administrator controls it, contact your organization’s IT administrator instead of trying to bypass the policy. Google recommends allowing auto-updates so users receive security fixes and new features. See Manage Chrome updates (Windows) and Chrome browser policy management.
