To turn on automatic iOS updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and enable Automatically Install. Apple says iPhone downloads and installs an available update overnight when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and notifies you before installation.
Enable automatic iOS updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
With this option enabled, Apple says an available iOS update downloads and installs overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You are notified before installation. See Apple’s instructions for updating iPhone.
Choose between installing automatically and downloading for later
If you want iOS updates downloaded but prefer to decide when to install them, turn off Automatically Install. Apple says this exposes Automatically Download, which downloads the update over Wi-Fi while the iPhone is charging and locked; you can install it later.
Back up and check which updates your iPhone can receive
Apple recommends backing up your iPhone before updating. To check its installed version and whether an update is available, open Settings > General > Software Update. The iPhone shows updates compatible with that device; availability is not identical across all models. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list includes iPhone 11 and later, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, but check the list and your iPhone’s Software Update screen for your specific model.

If an update is offered and you want to install it yourself, tap Download and Install. If it has already been downloaded, Apple’s instructions also describe choosing Update Now or Update Tonight.
Keep related security settings separate
System Files
System file updates are controlled separately from full iOS updates. In the iOS Updates settings, turn off Automatically Install and turn on Automatically Install under System Files to configure them independently. See Apple’s iPhone user guide for update settings.

Background Security Improvements
These improvements have a separate control at Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. Apple describes them as additional protection between software updates and says they can be set to install automatically. In rare cases involving compatibility issues, Apple may temporarily remove an improvement and include it in a future software update. This is not the main automatic iOS update switch. - Open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and confirm Automatically Install is on.
- Check whether the iPhone was charging and connected to Wi-Fi overnight, the conditions Apple gives for automatic installation.
- Check Settings > General > Software Update for an available update, then install it manually if you prefer not to wait.
- Apple also documents updating an iPhone using a Mac or Windows computer.
Charging is one of Apple’s stated conditions; a new cable or accessory is not required if your existing setup keeps the iPhone charging overnight.
