The setting is available on Gmail in a web browser, Android, and iPhone or iPad; the exact steps differ by platform.
Turn off Smart Compose in Gmail on a computer
- Open Gmail in a web browser and click the Settings gear.
- Click See all settings.
- In the General tab, scroll to Smart Compose.
- Select Writing suggestions off. Gmail’s General settings use this control to stop writing suggestions.
Turn off Smart Compose in the Gmail mobile app
Android
- Open the Gmail app and tap Menu, then Settings.
- Select the Google Account you want to change.
- Turn off Smart Compose. Google’s Android instructions identify this as the control for predictive suggestions.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the Gmail app and tap Menu, then Settings.
- Under Compose and reply, turn off Smart compose. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe this setting.
Know which setting stops predictions
On a computer, Smart Compose and Smart Compose personalization are separate settings. Turning personalization off does not disable predictions: Gmail can still show generic suggestions. To stop suggestions as you type, switch off the main Smart Compose writing-suggestions control. Google’s personalization guidance explains the distinction.
If suggestions still appear on another device
Smart Compose is a Google Account-level setting, so the change applies across devices where that account is signed in. If suggestions persist, check that you changed the setting for the same account selected in Gmail on that device. Google documents this account scope in its desktop, Android, and iPhone/iPad guidance.
What Smart Compose does—and does not do
Smart Compose offers writing suggestions as you compose email. Google says the feature is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. It also cautions that Smart Compose is not designed to provide answers and may not always predict factually correct information. See Google’s Smart Compose information.
