How do I turn off recent apps on Android? You can clear apps from the Recents screen, remove suggested apps on supported Samsung Galaxy phones, or hide selected apps with Android 15 Private Space. Android does not offer a universal switch to disable the Recents interface itself.
What “turn off recent apps” means on Android
Recents—also called the Overview screen or recent task list—is Android’s system interface for returning to recently used tasks. Swiping an app card away removes that task from the list; it does not turn off the system interface. Android Developers describes the screen and its task-switching role in the Recents screen documentation.
Choose the action that matches your goal: swipe away a card to remove one task, use Clear all to clear the list, disable the recommendation row on a supported Galaxy device, or use Private Space to conceal selected apps while it is locked.
How do I clear all recent apps?
On Android 14 and later, Google’s general Android instructions use gesture navigation to open Recents. The exact position of Clear all can differ on Android Go.

- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, hold, then release to open Recents. If your Android Go device uses three-button navigation, tap the Recent apps button instead.
- To close one app, swipe its card up.
- To close every listed app, swipe across the Recents list from left to right, then tap Clear all on the left. On Android Go, look for Clear all at the bottom.
These steps follow Google’s Find, open and close apps on Android instructions. Some system apps, such as Google Play services, may not close through a Recents gesture.

Samsung Galaxy: remove suggested apps from Recents
Galaxy’s recommended-app row is a separate feature from the Recents screen. To remove it, open Recents, tap More options (three vertical dots), tap Settings, then switch off Show recommended apps. Samsung’s Galaxy multitasking guidance notes that screens and settings can vary by device model, software version, and wireless service provider.
Can I hide an app from recent apps?
Android 15 Private Space can hide selected apps when the space is locked. Google says those apps are hidden from the apps list, recent apps view, notifications, and settings; this is a privacy feature for apps in Private Space, not a switch that disables Recents. The feature and its description are covered in Google’s Android 15 announcement, published October 15, 2024. Availability and behavior can vary by device.

Should you close every app to save memory or battery?
Usually, no. Google says Android manages memory and battery automatically: “Even if you don’t close apps, you won’t run out of memory or battery. Android manages these automatically.” Close an app when you need to remove its task or address a specific app problem, rather than routinely clearing Recents for performance.
