To turn off predictive text on an iPad, open Settings > General > Keyboard and switch off Predictive Text. You can also open Keyboard Settings from the onscreen keyboard without leaving the app you’re typing in.
Turn off predictive text in Settings

Open the Settings app.

Tap General, then Keyboard.

Turn off Predictive Text.
Apple describes this setting as controlling suggested words and other information above the onscreen keyboard, as well as inline predictions that appear as gray text while you type. The exact controls shown can vary by iPadOS version. See Apple’s iPad predictive text guide and its Hong Kong guide version, which shows a separate Show Predictions Inline control.
Open Keyboard Settings while typing

With the onscreen keyboard visible, touch and hold the Emoji key or Switch Keyboard key.

Tap Keyboard Settings.

Turn off Predictive Text.
This shortcut takes you to the keyboard settings from the current typing context. Apple documents it in the iPad predictive text guide.

If corrections or shortcuts still appear
Stop automatic spelling corrections
Predictive Text and Auto-Correction are separate controls. Turning off Predictive Text does not necessarily stop the iPad from correcting misspelled words. To change that behavior, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Auto-Correction. Apple notes that you can also reject an individual correction by tapping its “x.” See Apple’s Auto-Correction and predictive text guidance.
Manage saved text shortcuts
Text Replacement shortcuts are saved phrases or abbreviations, not predictive suggestions. To remove or add one, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement. Turning off Predictive Text does not remove or change these shortcuts. Apple’s typing assistance guide covers this separate setting.

Using an external keyboard
Predictive text and smart punctuation settings can apply to onscreen and external keyboards. Some other options, including Auto-Correction and Auto-Capitalization, may have separate controls for an external keyboard under Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard. The available options depend on the keyboard and iPadOS version. See Apple’s instructions for typing assistance with an Apple external keyboard and shortcuts on an Apple external keyboard.

Check Settings > General > Keyboard and look for a separate inline predictions control, such as Show Predictions Inline, if your iPad displays one.

Confirm that you changed the setting for the keyboard behavior you mean: suggestions above the keyboard, inline completions, spelling corrections, and Text Replacement are different features.

Predictive text and inline predictions are not supported in every language. If the option or behavior differs, check Apple’s language availability information and confirm which iPadOS version your iPad is running.
