To stop one iPhone app from receiving your specific location while still allowing approximate location, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, tap the app, and turn off Precise Location. This changes location precision for that app; it does not revoke the app’s Location Services permission.
Turn off Precise Location for one app

Open Settings.

Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.

Scroll to the app and tap its name.

Turn off Precise Location.
With this setting off, the app receives approximate rather than specific location when it uses Location Services. Apple notes that approximate location may be enough for apps that do not need your exact position. Apple’s iPhone guide to controlling location information describes this app-level control.
Choose whether the app can access Location Services
Precision and permission are separate settings. If you want to prevent an app from accessing your location through Location Services, return to that app’s entry and change Allow Location Access. Apple documents choices including Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, and Always; an app may offer fewer options. Apple’s Location Services instructions explain the available access choices.
- Approximate location, app access allowed: Turn off Precise Location and retain an access option that suits how you use the app.
- No Location Services access for that app: Set Allow Location Access to Never.
How this differs from turning off Location Services
The switch at the top of Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services affects Location Services across the device, rather than just one app. Apple says apps cannot use location through Location Services in the foreground or background when this is off, and warns that some Apple and third-party app features may be limited. Apple’s overview of Location Services and privacy covers the device-wide control.

Turning off Location Services is not a guarantee that no service can determine your location: third parties may use other means. Apple also notes that emergency-call location may be used to support a response even when Location Services is disabled. Apple’s personal-safety guide to location sharing provides additional context.
Do not confuse it with Limit Precise Location
Limit Precise Location is a separate mobile-network control on certain supported iPhones and with eligible mobile-network providers. Apple’s article, published September 18, 2026, says it affects the location precision available to mobile networks; it does not change location shared with apps through Location Services. It is not the app-specific Precise Location switch described above. See Apple’s explanation of Limit Precise Location.
