In the updated Copilot app for Windows 11, sign in with your personal Microsoft account and go to Settings > Personalization. Turn Allow ads personalization off. This stops ads from being personalized; it does not remove ads from Copilot.
Turn off personalized ads in the Copilot app
- Open the updated Copilot app and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
- Open Settings, then select Personalization.
- Turn Allow ads personalization off.
Microsoft’s instructions describe this setting in the Copilot app rather than as a Windows 11-only control. They apply to the updated personal Copilot app for web, desktop, and mobile. Use the Microsoft privacy dashboard for a broader choice
To manage personalized advertising across Microsoft services, use the Microsoft privacy dashboard and open See ads and offers that interest you. This is broader than changing the Copilot app’s ad-personalization toggle.
What turning the setting off changes
The control affects ad personalization, not whether ads appear. Microsoft says generic ads may still be selected using the most recent content in the current conversation. Personalized ads may use chat history, saved memories, and other Microsoft data you chose to share. See Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ for its explanation.

Copilot personalization and memory are separate from ad personalization. Turning off memory or other shared-experience personalization controls does not replace the ad-specific setting. Microsoft explicitly says the shared experiences setting does not control whether personalized ads are shown in Copilot; see its Copilot privacy controls.
Why the Windows advertising ID is not a substitute
Windows 11 has a separate advertising ID setting for apps that use that identifier. Turning it off does not control every form of interest-based advertising from Microsoft or third parties, and it does not promise fewer ads. Use the Copilot ad toggle or the Microsoft privacy dashboard for the choices described above. Check your account and app version
- Personal account: These steps are for Copilot used with a personal Microsoft account. They do not apply to work, school, or other organizational Microsoft Entra accounts.
- Older Copilot app: The legacy app has separate instructions. If the setting is missing or the screens do not match, check whether you are using the updated app; Microsoft maintains separate legacy Copilot privacy guidance.
- Under 18: Microsoft says authenticated Copilot users under 18 do not receive personalized advertising, regardless of settings. See its privacy controls article.
