To reduce ad personalization, open Settings > Ad Controls and switch off ad personalization. This does not remove ads: ChatGPT may still use the context of your current chat to select them. OpenAI lists a Free no-ads option with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features, as well as ad-free paid plans such as Plus and Pro. The controls and options depend on region and availability.
Turn off ad personalization in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Select Ad Controls. OpenAI says this section is available to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or expected soon.
- Switch off ad personalization.
With personalization off, ads may still be selected using the current chat thread. The setting prevents other chats, your ads history, and topics from informing ad selection; it does not switch ads off. If Ad Controls is missing in the mobile app, update the app and check again.
Ways to see fewer or no ads

OpenAI’s current help article says ads may appear for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. It also says ads are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. OpenAI says ad testing began in the United States on February 9, 2026; this is a rollout milestone, not a guarantee of availability everywhere. Hide or report an individual ad
To act on a particular ad, open its three-dot menu and choose the option to hide or report it. OpenAI says reporting an ad hides it and sends it for review.

Ad controls are separate from model-training settings
Changing model-training or data controls is not OpenAI’s documented way to remove ads. Use Ad Controls to change ad personalization; use an eligible no-ads option or an ad-free plan if your goal is not to see ads.
