“Hardware acceleration” can mean two different things on a Windows PC: Windows’ Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), or graphics acceleration controlled separately inside an application. Turning off HAGS does not turn off acceleration in Chrome, Firefox, or other apps; use the section that matches the problem you are troubleshooting.
Turn off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Default settings, select Change default graphics settings.
- Turn Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off.
- Restart Windows.
The current Windows 11 path is Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Windows may require a restart before the change takes effect. Test the affected game or application after restarting.
Turn off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Display.
- Select Graphics settings.
- Select Change default graphics settings. Depending on the Windows 10 build, this may be labeled Default graphics settings.
- Turn Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off.
- Restart the computer.
The Windows 10 path is usually Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings > Change default graphics settings. HAGS was introduced in Windows 10 version 2004 and requires a compatible graphics driver. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides normal security or feature updates for it.
What hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling changes
Normally, Windows and the CPU perform much of the frequent work involved in scheduling GPU tasks. HAGS moves more of that scheduling work to a dedicated scheduling processor on the GPU. Windows still controls application priorities; the feature does not hand complete control of the GPU to individual programs.

Turning HAGS off returns Windows to its conventional GPU scheduling mode. It does not:
- Disable the graphics card or DirectX.
- Prevent games from using the GPU.
- Turn off graphics acceleration in Chrome, Firefox, or another application.
- Guarantee better frame rates or lower temperatures.
Microsoft does not claim that HAGS is faster in every configuration. Results vary with the GPU, driver, game, application, and workload. Treat the change as a troubleshooting test: record how the system behaves, restart, and compare the same workload with the setting changed.
When disabling HAGS is worth testing
Try turning it off if a problem began after a Windows or graphics-driver update and includes symptoms such as:
- Game stuttering or inconsistent frame pacing.
- Screen flickering, visual corruption, or desktop-composition stutter.
- Video playback problems while another GPU-heavy application is running.
- GPU-driver crashes, freezes, or display-driver resets.
- Stuttering while dragging windows or switching between GPU-intensive applications.
These symptoms do not prove HAGS is the cause. A faulty, outdated, or incompatible graphics driver can cause similar problems. If turning HAGS off changes nothing, update or reinstall the graphics driver and test the application’s own graphics settings.

The Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling option is missing
The switch appears only when Windows detects compatible hardware and a graphics driver that reports support. HAGS requires driver support for WDDM 2.7 or later. A missing switch is therefore not automatically a Windows Settings problem.
Possible causes include:
- The GPU does not support HAGS.
- The installed driver does not expose HAGS support.
- Windows is using Microsoft Basic Display Driver instead of the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver.
- The computer is running through remote desktop, a virtual machine, or another nonstandard graphics environment.
- Windows or the graphics driver is outdated.
Check your Windows version
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter winver.
- Press Enter and note the Windows version and build.
Check the graphics device and driver
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter dxdiag and press Enter.
- Open the Display tab.
- Review the graphics device, driver, and driver-model information. The exact fields vary by Windows version and driver.
If the system is using Microsoft Basic Display Driver, install the correct graphics driver from the computer manufacturer or directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, as appropriate. Restart Windows and check the Graphics settings page again.
Do not force the option with a registry edit
Some troubleshooting pages recommend creating or changing this registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\HwSchMode

This is not the normal supported method for disabling HAGS. Use the Settings switch when Windows provides it. Do not create HwSchMode merely to make a missing option appear: a registry value cannot add support that the GPU or driver does not report.
Registry changes can cause serious system problems if the wrong key or value is changed. Before making any registry change, create a backup and use manufacturer or Microsoft support instructions specific to your system. For this setting, correcting the graphics driver is the safer first step.
Disable graphics acceleration in Google Chrome
Chrome has its own acceleration switch. Changing HAGS in Windows does not change this setting.
- Open Chrome.
- Enter chrome://settings/system in the address bar.
- Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.
- Select Relaunch if Chrome displays the button.
Recent Chrome versions generally use the wording Use graphics acceleration when available. Older instructions may call it Use hardware acceleration when available.

Disable hardware acceleration in Firefox
- Open Firefox and select the Menu button.
- Select Settings and stay on the General page.
- Scroll to Performance.
- Clear Use recommended performance settings.
- Clear Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Firefox.
Firefox may hide the hardware-acceleration checkbox when it detects an incompatible graphics driver. Mozilla lists video playback problems, flickering, high GPU temperature, and graphics-driver-related crashes as examples of situations where disabling acceleration may help.
Windows GPU scheduling and application acceleration are separate

If a browser is flickering but games work normally, changing the browser’s setting is the more targeted test. If several unrelated GPU applications crash or stutter, testing Windows HAGS may make more sense. You may need to change both settings, but one does not change the other.
Do not use the old Control Panel performance path
Instructions that tell you to open Control Panel > Display > Adjust appearance and performance of Windows refer to Windows visual-effects settings. That page can alter animations and other appearance options, but it does not disable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
How to test the change properly
- Note the exact problem, application, game, driver version, and Windows build.
- Change only one relevant acceleration setting.
- Restart the computer or application as requested.
- Repeat the same action that caused the problem, such as the same game scene or video stream.
- Compare stutter, crashes, flickering, frame pacing, and GPU usage rather than relying on a general feeling of speed.
- If the problem is unchanged, restore the original setting and investigate the graphics driver, application updates, temperatures, and background software.
FAQ
Does turning off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling disable my graphics card?
No. It changes how Windows schedules GPU work. Games and applications can still use the GPU, DirectX, and their own graphics-acceleration features.

Why can’t I see the Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling switch?
Windows shows the switch only when the detected GPU and driver report support. Check the Display tab in dxdiag, install the correct manufacturer driver, and restart. Unsupported hardware cannot be made compatible with a registry edit.
Will disabling HAGS increase FPS?
Not necessarily. Performance depends on the GPU, driver, game, and workload. Disabling it is best treated as a troubleshooting comparison, not a guaranteed gaming optimization.
Does disabling HAGS turn off Chrome or Firefox hardware acceleration?
No. Browser acceleration is controlled inside each browser. Use Chrome’s chrome://settings/system page or Firefox’s Settings > General > Performance section.
Should I disable hardware acceleration permanently?
Only if testing shows that it resolves a repeatable problem. Otherwise, leave the default setting in place and focus on driver updates or the affected application’s settings.

To disable Windows’ feature, use Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings, turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, and restart. If the problem is limited to a browser or another application, disable acceleration inside that application instead. Do not use a registry tweak to force a missing option to appear.
