You can often stop a drone app from syncing optional data to the manufacturer’s cloud, but that is different from disabling location checks used by safety features or a legally required Remote ID broadcast. For DJI consumer drones, review privacy settings or use Local Data Mode to disconnect DJI Fly from the internet. Keep any location permission and Remote ID functions required by your exact aircraft, controller, app, and local rules.
First identify which kind of location sharing you mean
“Location sharing” is not one universal drone switch. Several different data flows may be involved, and changing one does not necessarily change the others.

For DJI, turn off optional sharing or use Local Data Mode
DJI’s consumer privacy guide says flight logs, images, and video are optional and are not collected by default in the described setup. It directs users to the app’s Settings to change privacy preferences. The guide also notes that Sync Flight Data is no longer available in the United States. See DJI’s privacy and security FAQ; menu labels and availability can vary by app release and region.
Review privacy preferences
Open DJI Fly’s Settings and review its privacy permissions and any flight-log synchronization options shown for your account and region. Turn off only the optional sharing you do not want. Do not assume that a setting for flight-log sync controls phone location access or Remote ID.

Enable Local Data Mode
- In DJI Fly, open Settings.
- Open Notification and Privacy.
- Turn on Local Data Mode.
These are the steps in DJI’s guide; labels may shift between releases. DJI describes Local Data Mode as disconnecting the flight app from the internet, which disables app features that need a connection to DJI’s cloud. For fully offline use, DJI says to turn off Wi-Fi and cellular connections on the mobile device as well. That also cuts off other network-dependent services on the device.
DJI says activation requires an email address, password, and drone serial number. For relevant map and geofencing functions, its guide describes an approximate location check at activation. DJI says users can opt out of that safety feature with Local Data Mode; it also says the check receives a random offset within a 5–10 km radius and that the data is temporary and not stored on DJI servers. Those are DJI’s statements about its own system, not an independent verification or a guarantee of anonymity, and the figure does not describe Remote ID location accuracy. Keep Remote ID and required location access working
Remote ID is a local broadcast, not the same thing as uploading flight data to a cloud account. The FAA defines it as a drone’s ability “to provide identification and location information that can be received by other people through a broadcast signal.” Read the FAA’s Remote ID guidance for current U.S. requirements.
DJI’s U.S. FAQ says compliant Remote ID firmware does not allow the system to be manually disabled. DJI’s Remote ID FAQ also says some controller setups without integrated GNSS need a connected phone or tablet with integrated GNSS as the location source. In those configurations, DJI says to keep DJI Fly in the foreground and allow it to access location. Other listed controller and goggle configurations have integrated GNSS, so requirements depend on the precise setup.

Do not revoke the phone’s location permission or close the app during flight until you have checked the instructions for your specific aircraft and controller. Remote ID availability and location permission are configuration-specific; an app privacy toggle should not be used to disable or obstruct a required broadcast.
If your drone does not have standard Remote ID
For applicable U.S. operations, FAA guidance describes compliance routes that include a Standard Remote ID drone, an eligible drone equipped with an accepted broadcast module, or operation without Remote ID equipment in an FAA-recognized identification area (FRIA), subject to the applicable conditions. A module is a conditional retrofit for eligible aircraft; it does not turn off location sharing, and a generic module should not be assumed compatible or accepted. Confirm aircraft eligibility, registration, module acceptance, and operating conditions using the FAA Remote ID guidance and current rules before flying.

What to check before changing settings
- Aircraft and controller: Find the exact model and whether its controller has integrated GNSS or relies on a mobile device.
- App and version: Check the current manual and app menus; a DJI path is an example, not a universal instruction for other brands.
- Country and operating location: The FAA guidance applies to the United States. DJI’s consumer privacy guide says it does not apply to users in China. Elsewhere, consult the local aviation regulator and manufacturer’s current documentation.
- Desired outcome: If you want to stop cloud syncing, change that preference; if you want the app offline, understand the effects of Local Data Mode; if you mean Remote ID, follow the applicable compliance rules rather than trying to disable it.
DJI’s privacy and controller guidance is available through its Trust Center FAQ and Remote ID FAQ. For another manufacturer—or when labels differ—use the current aircraft and controller manual and the rules of the country where you will fly.
