There is no single switch that turns off every Microsoft Family Safety feature. An organizer must change the specific control—screen time, app and game limits, web filtering, or activity reporting. If you are an adult whose Windows device still applies old restrictions, use Microsoft’s separate device-refresh procedure.
Before you change anything: identify your role and goal
Family Safety settings are controlled separately, and who can change them depends on your role in the family group. An organizer can manage a member’s settings. An adult who is a member must ask the organizer to change restrictions; Microsoft says only the organizer can currently change that adult’s safety settings. Microsoft’s roles and permissions guide explains the distinction.
Choose the setting you want to stop below. Turning off one feature does not turn off the others.
- Screen-time limits: stop scheduled or allotted device-use limits.
- App and game limits: stop restrictions on individual apps or games.
- Web and search filtering: stop filtering of websites and searches.
- Activity reporting: stop reports about device and app use.
- Windows still enforcing old settings: refresh the affected device after your account is no longer subject to those restrictions.
- Leave the family group: leave the group rather than just changing a safety feature.
Turn off screen-time limits
As the organizer, open the Microsoft Family Safety app or the Microsoft family account page. Select the family member, choose the relevant platform tab—Windows, Xbox, or Mobile—and turn off the screen-time limits. Microsoft’s instructions cover screen-time controls across devices; the Mobile limits described there apply to Android devices. See Set screen time limits across devices.

Turn off app and game limits
In the Family Safety app or on the family account page, select the member and platform, then open Apps, features, and games. Turn off App and game limits. These controls are separate from screen-time limits, so change both if you want to stop both types of restriction. Microsoft also notes that related website blocking is handled through app and game settings; web filtering has its own controls. Details are in Set app and game limits.
Turn off web and search filtering
As the organizer, open the member’s Web safety or Edge settings and switch off Filter inappropriate websites and searches. If Only use allowed websites is enabled, turn that off separately if it is also restricting access.

Microsoft says web and search filtering works only in supported browsers and requires the family member to be signed in to their Microsoft account. Changing these filters does not disable screen time, app limits, or activity reporting. See Filter websites and searches using Microsoft Family Safety.

Turn off activity reporting
Activity reporting has its own controls. An organizer can turn it off separately for Windows, Xbox, Web safety, or Mobile in the Family Safety app or family account settings. Microsoft says only organizers can enable, disable, and view activity reports. Reporting depends on connected devices; web reporting is limited to supported browsers when the member is signed in. See View device and app use with Family Safety activity reporting.

If you are an adult member, ask the organizer
If you are an adult in a family group with a member role, Microsoft’s current guidance is to contact the organizer and ask them to disable the safety configurations. Microsoft has described an option for adults to choose whether organizers can manage their safety settings as a future update, but has not given a release date. Do not assume that option is available now. See Family Safety settings enforced on adults.
Refresh an adult’s Windows device if restrictions remain
If you are an adult who is no longer part of a family group, or you have an organizer role, but a Windows device still applies Family Safety settings, Microsoft documents a refresh task. Run it on each affected device and restart that device afterward.

- Press Windows+R to open Run, enter
cmd, and press Enter. - At the Command Prompt, run:
schtasks /run /tn "MicrosoftWindowsShellFamilySafetyRefreshTask" - Restart the computer. Repeat these steps on every affected device.
These are Microsoft’s documented steps; the support instructions do not specify that Command Prompt must be run as administrator. See Family Safety settings enforced on adults.

Leave a family group or remove a member
Leaving a group is different from turning off a feature. An adult member can leave through the family account site; only an organizer can remove another member. To remove a child account, the adult who granted consent must first remove that consent, then complete the group removal. Leaving or being removed does not delete the Microsoft account. Microsoft also advises considering saved places and location alerts before leaving. Follow Leave family group or remove members for the applicable steps.
