To return a Chromebook in ordinary Developer Mode to its verified startup state, restart it and use the on-screen prompt to return to secure mode—on a Chromebook with a keyboard, press Space and follow the prompts. This transition erases local data, so back up first. If you enabled debugging features or changed ChromeOS system files, use ChromeOS recovery instead; Google says recovery is required to turn debugging off. These steps do not establish how to restore custom firmware or UEFI.

First, identify what you need to undo

“Relock the bootloader” can mean different things on a Chromebook. Turning off ChromeOS Developer Mode and restoring OS verification is not the same as reversing a custom firmware or UEFI installation. Choose the path that matches what changed:

What changed General path Main consequence
Developer Mode only; ChromeOS is otherwise intact Return to secure mode from the startup screen with Space and follow the prompts Local data is cleared
Debugging features were enabled or ChromeOS system files were changed Recover ChromeOS, using internet recovery if available or external recovery media ChromeOS is reinstalled and the local drive is erased
Custom firmware or UEFI was flashed Use model- and firmware-specific support General ChromeOS instructions are not sufficient to restore the original firmware
Work- or school-managed Chromebook Contact the organization’s administrator Forced re-enrollment may apply after a wipe

Turn off ordinary Developer Mode

  1. Back up local files. Copy anything important off the Chromebook, especially files in Downloads. Returning to secure mode clears local data. Google’s Chrome Enterprise instructions for wiping ChromeOS device data describe the secure-mode transition; its factory-reset guidance also warns that a reset erases local data.
  2. Restart to the startup screen. Restart the Chromebook and wait for the Developer Mode or OS verification screen.
  3. Choose secure mode. On a Chromebook with a keyboard, press Space and follow the on-screen prompts to return to secure mode. Do not use Ctrl+D as the relock action; Google documents it in the flow for entering Developer Mode.
  4. Wait for the transition to finish. Allow the Chromebook to restart, then complete setup. If a work or school enrollment screen appears, contact the administrator.

Use recovery if debugging features or system files were changed

Powerwash and ChromeOS recovery are different. A Powerwash resets the device but may leave most debugging features in place. Google’s debugging-features guidance says: “To turn off debugging, perform a recovery.” Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases the Chromebook’s hard drive, so back up anything you can before starting.

Recover with a USB drive

  1. Enter recovery mode on the affected Chromebook. For most keyboard models, hold Esc + Refresh, press Power, release Power, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears. Some models use Esc + Maximize. Follow the prompt if your model displays different instructions.
  2. Create recovery media on another computer. Use another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome. Open the Chromebook Recovery Utility and select the affected Chromebook’s correct model. Insert a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity that can be erased, then create the recovery media. Google’s recovery instructions specify the utility and media requirements.
  3. Run recovery. On the affected Chromebook, choose recovery using external media and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Set up the Chromebook again. After recovery completes, proceed through setup. The USB drive remains recovery media until you erase it using the Recovery Utility.

Use internet recovery if the Chromebook offers it

Some newer Chromebook models offer internet recovery, which can avoid making a USB drive. Availability and recovery steps depend on the model; older devices may not support this option. Use the recovery choice shown on your Chromebook and follow Google’s model-specific instructions. If your model is not listed or recovery errors persist, contact the manufacturer through Google’s recovery support guidance.

If custom firmware or UEFI was flashed

Do not assume that returning to secure mode or reinstalling ChromeOS restores firmware that was replaced or modified. Google’s general Chromebook guidance covers Developer Mode, debugging, resets and ChromeOS recovery, but does not establish a universal rollback for custom UEFI or other firmware. Stop before trying key combinations or commands intended for another model. Use instructions specific to the Chromebook model and the firmware project or manufacturer involved.

For a work- or school-managed Chromebook

Ask the organization’s administrator before wiping or recovering the device. A forced re-enrollment policy can remain in effect after local data is erased, so resetting the Chromebook may not remove its management. Administrators should follow their organization’s enrollment process after a wipe.
