If Bluetooth headphones keep cutting out, try a stability setting before changing codecs: on supported Sony models, select Priority on stable connection; on Android, turn off HD Audio if that switch is available. Android’s codec controls vary by phone and headphones, while Apple’s documented iPhone settings do not include a general Bluetooth codec selector. First check that the problem is actually a dropout—not muted audio or incorrect routing.
First identify the problem
Codec and connection-quality settings are most relevant when audio plays but becomes intermittent or unstable. If there is no sound, or calls go to the wrong device, check the Bluetooth connection and audio-routing settings first; those problems may have nothing to do with the codec.
- Intermittent playback or dropouts: Try a connection-stability setting or, where available, turn off HD audio.
- No music or sound from the headphones: Check that the accessory is connected and that media audio is enabled.
- Calls do not use the headphones: Check the accessory’s phone-audio setting and the selected call destination.
Bluetooth audio uses a codec supported by both the sending device and the headphones. Android Open Source Project documentation explains that negotiation selects a codec both sides support; phone makers can customize codec preferences and settings. Android Open Source Project: Bluetooth services
Try the basic Bluetooth checks first
For Pixel phones, Google recommends toggling Bluetooth off and on, confirming the headphones are paired and connected, and restarting the devices. If music is silent, check the volume, make sure another paired device has not taken the music, and enable Media audio for the accessory. For call audio, check Phone audio separately. These are Pixel-specific instructions; other Android phones may use different labels.

Use Developer options only if needed
If there is no HD Audio switch and you have a reason to try a different codec, Android Developer options may offer Bluetooth Audio Codec or controls for optional codecs. This is a secondary troubleshooting route: available options depend on the phone’s software and the connected headphones, and a selectable codec must be supported by both.
- Enable Developer options if they are not already available. Android’s instructions say to tap Build number seven times. On Pixel, find it under Settings > About phone > Build number. On Samsung Galaxy S8 and later, the documented route is Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number. Menu names and locations can vary on newer models.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options.
- Find Bluetooth Audio Codec or the optional-codec enable/disable controls. Choose only an option supported by both devices.
- Reconnect the headphones and compare playback with the same audio in the same place. If the selection is unavailable, resets, or does not help, restore the default or choose the simplest mutually supported option. Avoid changing sample rate or other debugging controls without a specific reason.
Android Developers documents how to enable Developer options and describes the codec controls; the available menus and choices are implementation-dependent. Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options

Sony headphones: prioritize connection stability
For the Sony LinkBuds Fit, Sony’s Sound Connect app includes Priority on stable connection. Sony recommends it when the connection is unstable or sound is intermittent. Open Sound Connect, find the model’s sound-quality or Bluetooth connection setting, and select that priority. Other Sony models may use a different app or menu, so this path is not universal.
Sony cautions that environmental conditions can still cause intermittent sound after selecting the stability priority. Treat the setting as a troubleshooting choice, not a guarantee. Sony LinkBuds Fit Help Guide (2024)

Do not look for Android Developer options on an iPhone. Apple’s cited iPhone guidance covers choosing a Bluetooth playback destination and identifying the Bluetooth device type; it does not document a general user-facing Bluetooth codec selector. Apple says AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use the AAC Bluetooth codec, and that Bluetooth connections are not lossless.

If sound is silent or playing through the wrong device, select the intended Bluetooth accessory as the playback destination and check its connection. If the issue concerns Apple Music quality, its streaming and download quality controls are separate from Bluetooth codec selection: changing Music’s lossless setting does not make Bluetooth transmission lossless. How to tell whether the change helped
After changing one setting, reconnect the headphones and replay the same material in the same location. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether the result came from the setting or from a change in surroundings or playback. If audio still drops out, restore the default codec setting and check the device connection and environment rather than cycling through unrelated developer controls.
