Turn off notifications without changing memory
Look for a Notifications setting in the AI companion app. If alerts still arrive after you switch them off in the app, check the app’s notification permission in your phone’s system settings. App controls and device permissions are distinct: changing one may not change the other.
Replika
Replika’s help article documents enabling messages by opening the app, going to Settings > Notifications, and switching the setting on. It does not describe the off procedure. If that control is present in your version, use it to disable notifications; if push alerts continue, review Replika’s notification permission in your device settings. Turn off or review ChatGPT memory
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review the controls shown in your account. Depending on the memory experience and account context, they may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Labels and availability can vary.

Switching memory off is not the same as deleting information already stored. OpenAI states, “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” A saved memory may also remain separately from the chat where you first shared the detail, so deleting only that chat may not remove the saved memory.
Remove remembered information and its sources
If you want a detail removed from future personalization, inspect and delete the saved memory as well as the original chat that supplied it. Depending on where the information came from, you may also need to remove applicable files or disconnect relevant apps. Memory changes and deletions can take time to propagate. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help article for the current controls and details.

Understand the two history controls
- Reference chat history: Turning this off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately. OpenAI also states, “Turning off Reference chat history does not delete your saved memories.”
- Reference saved memories: In the documented setup, turning this off also turns off Reference chat history. Review the settings shown in your account, since the available controls can differ.
Turning memory back on may allow new remembered information to be created from chat history that still exists. Memory controls affect use of remembered context; they are not a general deletion switch for your account’s chats.
Review personalization separately from memory
In ChatGPT, custom instructions are direct guidance about what the service should know about you and how it should respond. Memory is context that can accumulate across conversations and available sources. If you want less tailored responses, review both memory settings and custom instructions rather than assuming that switching off memory removes every preference or instruction. Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not update memory
Before starting a ChatGPT Temporary Chat, choose whether it can use existing memories and custom instructions. OpenAI says a Temporary Chat does not create or update memories, even when Memory is on, and the choice about using existing personalization cannot be changed after the chat starts. Limited safety-related context may still apply in rare, high-risk situations. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat subject to your account settings. This is a conversation-specific option, not a replacement for reviewing account-wide settings. Details are in OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT article.
What Replika’s memory controls do—and do not establish
Replika describes memory as layered: visible items appear in the Memory tab, while deeper patterns can be based on conversation history. Manually added memories can coexist with automatically generated ones, and deleting memories may affect the companion’s ability to recall details. The cited help article does not establish an account-wide memory-off path, so do not assume deleting visible items disables every layer. Keep privacy controls distinct
Memory is only one category of privacy setting. OpenAI’s ChatGPT privacy settings page groups options such as Temporary Chats, memory, app connections, model improvement, and personalized ads where the plan includes ads. Switching off memory does not, by itself, change model-improvement choices, disconnect apps, or change personalized-ad settings; review those controls separately if they are your concern.
When the app’s instructions are unclear
Settings and documentation differ by service, platform, account, and workspace. Do not apply another app’s menu path to yours. Character.AI’s mobile help page confirms support coverage for iOS, iPad, and Android, but does not provide notification or memory steps.
