To stop Creative Cloud apps updating automatically, change the setting in the Creative Cloud desktop app. For desktop Acrobat on Windows, use Acrobat’s Updater preference. Acrobat for Mac has a similar preference location, but its exact controls can vary by release. Reader and organization-managed computers may use different settings.
Turn off automatic updates for Creative Cloud apps
These steps apply to supported Creative Cloud apps on Windows and macOS. Adobe says apps are set to update automatically by default when Creative Cloud desktop is first installed. The labels below follow Adobe’s instructions, last updated June 15, 2026; they can change in later releases. Adobe’s Creative Cloud auto-update instructions.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app and select Apps.
- In the Installed apps panel, select More actions, then Enable auto-updates. If automatic updates are already enabled, choose Manage auto-updates.
- Turn off Auto-update to disable it for all supported apps. To keep automatic updates for some apps, leave the overall setting on and switch off the toggle beside each app you want to update manually.
- Select Done.
Adobe displays advanced options for retaining previous settings and preferences or removing older versions only while auto-updates are enabled. If the setting is locked, an organization has likely required automatic updates.
Turn off automatic updates in Acrobat
Acrobat on Windows
Adobe documents this in-app preference for desktop Acrobat; it does not disable updates for other Adobe products. The option is enabled by default, according to Adobe’s help page, last updated November 26, 2025. Adobe’s Acrobat update-preference instructions.

Acrobat on Mac
In Acrobat, select Acrobat > Preferences > Updater. Adobe’s current page documents this location and explains how to enable Automatically Install Updates, but does not explicitly describe the inverse action for macOS. If the checkbox is present in your installed version, clear it to turn off automatic installation. The wording or available controls may differ by release. Check Adobe’s Acrobat update-preference page.
What to do about Adobe Reader
Adobe’s current preference page is for Acrobat and does not establish one universal procedure for turning off Reader updates across current Windows and Mac versions. Avoid treating the Acrobat steps as a guaranteed Reader setting. On Windows, Adobe lists system policies that block installation, disabled automatic patched updates, and administrative-install-point (AIP) installations as possible causes of Reader update failures. If Reader is installed or managed by an employer, school, or IT department, ask the administrator how updates are controlled. Adobe’s Windows Reader update troubleshooting page.

Registry or plist edits are not a routine consumer fix: the applicable controls depend on deployment and version, and Adobe’s current material cited here does not establish a complete cross-platform Reader policy procedure.
Why a Creative Cloud auto-update control may be missing or locked
Adobe identifies several reasons the Creative Cloud setting may be unavailable. These explanations concern Creative Cloud app updates; they should not be assumed to explain an Acrobat or Reader preference.

Install updates manually when you choose
Turning off automatic installation means you need to check for updates yourself. For Creative Cloud apps, open the Creative Cloud desktop app and select Home > Updates, then select Update beside an app. Adobe advises saving your work and closing apps before updating. Adobe’s manual Creative Cloud update steps.
For Reader on Windows, Adobe’s update-failure guidance includes Menu > Help > Check for updates. This is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal instruction for changing Reader’s update preferences. If your device is organization-managed, an administrator may need to perform or authorize updates.
Choose automatic or manual installation
| Choice | Who controls update timing? | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic installation | Updates install automatically where the product and policy allow it. | An administrator may enforce or restrict the setting on a managed device. |
| Manual installation | You choose when to start updates. | You must check for and initiate updates yourself; managed-device policy may still apply. |
In Creative Cloud, the choice can also be global or app by app: switch off Auto-update for all supported apps, or keep it on and disable individual app toggles. Acrobat’s documented Windows preference is separate from this Creative Cloud control.
