To turn off a responsive Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap Power off again to confirm. You can also shut it down from Quick Settings. If the phone is frozen, the same button combination forces a restart instead of opening the normal shutdown menu.
How do I turn off my Samsung S20 Ultra?
Use either of these normal shutdown methods. Samsung notes that screen layouts and settings can vary with the model, software version, and carrier.
Use the buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for a few seconds.
- When the power menu appears, tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm.
Use Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Depending on the layout, you may need to swipe down again to expand the panel.
- Tap the Power icon, usually near the upper-right corner.
- Tap Power off, then tap Power off again to confirm.
These are two alternatives for a phone that is responding: the first uses the buttons, while Quick Settings lets you start shutdown on the screen.
Why does holding the power button open Bixby?
The Side button’s press-and-hold action can be configured to open Bixby rather than the power menu. To change it, open Settings → Advanced features → Side button or Side key, then choose Power off menu for the press-and-hold action if that option is available. Menu wording and availability depend on the software version.

You do not need to change the setting to shut down: hold Side + Volume Down together, or use the Power icon in Quick Settings.
How do I turn off my Galaxy if the screen is frozen?
If the phone will not respond, press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together to force a restart. Samsung’s support instructions give different timing guidance for this procedure: one says about 10 seconds, another says more than 7 seconds, and another says shutdown can take up to 60 seconds. Keep holding until the phone turns off and starts back up; do not treat one duration as universal.

This button hold is a troubleshooting restart, not the normal menu-based shutdown. It does not leave the phone powered off.
