You can turn a working old iPhone or Android phone into a supplementary security camera by installing a camera app on it and pairing it with another supported device for viewing. The exact features depend on the app, phone, operating system, and network; a phone-based setup is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated CCTV system.
How the phone-camera setup works
The spare phone acts as the camera: it captures video and, depending on the app, may detect motion or record clips. A second phone or another supported device runs the viewer component. Some apps require an account; pairing methods vary, with QR pairing described in the UniCam setup guide (UniCam).
Whether you can view the camera remotely, receive alerts, or save recordings depends on the app and your network connection. Check the app listing and privacy disclosures for the specific recording, storage, and remote-access features you intend to use.
What you need before setup
- A spare phone with a working camera, reliable operation, and an operating system supported by the selected app.
- A separate phone or supported viewer device. Confirm the app supports both devices and their platforms; support differs by app. Examples of app-specific setup and compatibility details appear in the UniCam listing, P2P HomeCam listing, and RECAM listing.
- Network access suitable for the app’s pairing and viewing method. Remote viewing is app- and network-dependent.
- A charger and cable compatible with the spare phone, with a suitable outlet nearby. UniCam’s setup guide identifies nearby power as a setup requirement.
- Optionally, a phone stand, clamp, or tripod mount to hold the phone steady and aim it at the scene.
Set up the old phone as a camera
- Check the phone and app support. Confirm the camera works, the phone runs reliably, and the chosen app supports both the camera phone and viewer device. Check whether your intended viewing method requires an account or an internet connection.
- Install and pair the app. Install the app, or its camera and viewer components, on both devices. Create or sign in to an account if required, then follow the app’s pairing instructions. For example, the UniCam guide describes QR pairing; other apps may use a different method.
- Review permissions. Allow camera access on the spare phone. Allow microphone access only if you want audio and the app requires it. On iPhone, review app access at Settings > Privacy & Security; Apple says apps must request camera or microphone permission, and iOS shows indicators while those sensors are in use (Apple’s camera and microphone access guide). On Android, review the app’s permissions in Settings and, on supported versions, check the Privacy dashboard using Google’s permission instructions and Privacy dashboard guidance.
- Position the phone. Aim the camera at the area you want to monitor, check focus and lighting, and secure the phone so it cannot easily fall or shift. A stand or tripod mount is optional. Do not point it into spaces where people reasonably expect privacy.
- Connect power. Use a charger and cable compatible with that phone, and place it near a suitable outlet. Keep the cable routed safely and avoid placing the phone where it can overheat.
- Test the complete setup. Leave the app in its intended camera mode and lock the screen if that is how you plan to use it. Check live view, alerts, recording and playback, storage availability, and whether the app reconnects after a brief network interruption.
Check recording, remote viewing, and privacy claims
Do not assume that all footage is stored in the same place or that remote viewing works the same way across apps. The P2P HomeCam Google Play listing says its motion recordings remain on the camera device. RECAM’s listing says video is not recorded to the cloud. These are statements from the respective app publishers, not independent verification; check each app’s current privacy policy and store disclosures before relying on them.

Remote-access methods also vary. One reviewed Android app describes using a direct peer-to-peer connection where possible and an optional encrypted relay when needed. That is a claim about that particular app, not a general security guarantee. A store listing alone cannot establish that footage is secure or that an app’s privacy practices have been independently audited.
Because the camera app can access sensitive sensors, periodically review its permissions and watch for iPhone or Android indicators showing camera or microphone use. Revoke access if you stop using the app.

Keep the camera app running reliably
Continuous camera use and video streaming can consume battery, so keeping the phone connected to power is practical for an ongoing setup. Power alone does not guarantee that the app will keep running: Android may restrict background activity or revoke permissions for unused apps, and Battery Saver can limit activity or connectivity. Google describes these behaviors in its unused-app guidance and Battery Saver guidance. Menu names and behavior vary by Android release and phone manufacturer.
After setup, test the phone in the exact state you intend to use it—screen locked, app in its normal camera mode, and on the intended network. Recheck live view, alerts, recording, playback, and reconnection after the phone or router restarts. If the app stops working in the background, review its battery and permission settings for that phone and consult the app’s current support instructions.

When this is—and is not—a good fit
An old phone can be useful as a supplementary camera for checking a room or another limited area, especially when the phone and app remain dependable and their storage and access behavior suit your needs. It should not be treated as professional surveillance coverage: reliability, recording, retention, and remote access depend on the particular phone, app, operating system, and network. If you need a dependable security system, assess those requirements separately rather than assuming an app-based phone camera provides them.
