An old phone can serve as a handy hi-fi control screen, but it does not necessarily play the music. In the simplest setup, it runs an app that controls a separate network streamer or music server. Alternatively, the phone itself can be the audio source, connected to the stereo through a compatible output or DAC. Which approach works depends on the phone, playback equipment, apps, and home network.
Choose the phone’s role: remote or audio source
First decide whether the phone will control another device or send audio to the stereo. These are different jobs: the remote approach requires a compatible player and controller app; the source approach requires a working audio connection from the phone to an amplifier or receiver.
| Approach | What the phone does | What you need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Controller | Runs an app to browse, select, and control playback on a network streamer, server, or supported network DAC. | App compatibility, supported playback device, and network discovery. |
| Audio source | Plays music and sends its audio output to the stereo. | Phone output, any required adapter or DAC, and a matching amplifier input. |
Reusing the phone may save buying another control screen or playback source, but it does not by itself demonstrate improved sound quality. No controlled comparison establishes that a repurposed phone sounds better than another source.
Use the phone as a controller for a network player
This is often the most practical meaning of a dedicated hi-fi control phone: leave playback to a compatible streamer or server, and keep the old phone near the stereo for operating it. WiiM describes controlling its Pro with the WiiM Home app or supported music apps. JPLAY describes its app as a remote for compatible streamers, music servers, and network DACs. These are manufacturers’ descriptions, not independent compatibility tests. WiiM Pro overview; JPLAY how it works.

- Confirm app support. Check whether the old phone’s operating system can install and run the controller app, and whether that app supports your player.
- Put the phone and player on the same home network. WiiM’s setup guidance says the phone and Pro should share a network for device discovery.
- Open the controller app and select the playback device. Follow the app’s setup flow; available music services and controls depend on the player and app.
- Test the arrangement where you plan to use it. Confirm that the phone can find the player and control playback from its usual position near the stereo.
Some software arrangements require a separate core or server, as JPLAY’s documentation notes. A phone serving as a remote therefore does not necessarily replace the rest of a network playback system.
Use the phone itself as the audio source
If the phone plays the music directly, its audio must reach an input on the stereo. Depending on the phone and equipment, that may be a direct supported output or a path through an adapter and external USB DAC. Community discussions describe phones feeding DACs and receivers, but those examples do not establish that a particular combination will work or improve sound. - Identify the phone’s available audio output and the receiver or amplifier’s available inputs.
- Check whether the phone supports the adapter or USB DAC you intend to use; compatibility varies by model, operating system, and accessory.
- Match the output connection to an input on the stereo, and verify that the selected input produces sound.
- Consider how the phone will be powered and positioned for ongoing use.
Without the phone model and stereo inputs, there is no universal adapter or DAC recommendation. Check the specifications for both devices before buying accessories.

A separate streamer keeps network playback hardware independent of the old phone. WiiM positions the Pro as a way to add network streaming to an existing amplifier or powered speakers, with app-based control and analog and digital outputs. Its manufacturer page lists support for playback ecosystems including AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA, and Roon Ready; check the current product page for exact model features and service support, which can change. Compare convenience, compatibility, and cost
- Convenience: A controller phone can stay by the stereo while a separate player handles playback. A phone used as the source must remain connected to the audio system and available for playback.
- Compatibility: The controller route depends on supported apps, devices, and network discovery. The source route depends on the phone’s output, any adapter or DAC, and the amplifier’s inputs.
- Cost: Reuse can avoid buying a dedicated control device, but a source setup may require an adapter or DAC, and a network-player setup requires compatible playback hardware if you do not already own it.
- Sound quality: The available evidence does not establish that either phone arrangement improves sound quality. That comparison would depend on the actual equipment and a documented listening method.
