In Windows 11 and Windows 10, open the taskbar’s quick controls and select Airplane mode, or go to Start > Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and switch it on or off. Airplane mode turns off wireless communications; Windows remembers the previous Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings unless you change them while Airplane mode is active.
Turn Airplane mode on or off from the taskbar
- Select the Network, volume, or battery icon on the taskbar to open the quick controls. In Windows 11, this area is called Quick Settings.
- Select Airplane mode to toggle it on or off. If you do not see the control, use Settings instead.
Microsoft documents this taskbar method for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. The exact quick-controls layout can differ, so the Settings page is the more direct route when you cannot find the button. Microsoft’s network settings guidance covers both methods.
Use Windows Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Network & internet > Airplane mode.
- Set the Airplane mode toggle to On or Off.
This route makes the named Airplane mode setting easy to find even if the taskbar controls are arranged differently.
What Airplane mode changes
Microsoft describes Airplane mode as a quick way to turn off wireless communications. Its examples include Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communication (NFC). The devices and connections available on a particular PC depend on its hardware.

Windows remembers the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth states from before Airplane mode was enabled. If either was on, Windows may turn it back on when Airplane mode is used. To keep Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off while using Airplane mode, turn that connection off while Airplane mode is active. Microsoft says those choices remain off the next time Airplane mode is used and after you exit it. See Microsoft’s explanation of Airplane mode and wireless settings.
Use the keyboard or a screen reader
Press Windows key + A to open Quick Settings, then navigate to the Airplane mode button using your usual keyboard or screen-reader controls. Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions explain how to inspect the button; if it is on, pressing Spacebar turns it off.

Bluetooth is unavailable after changing Airplane mode
Confirm Airplane mode is off, then check that Bluetooth itself is enabled. Microsoft includes both checks in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

The Bluetooth control is missing or grayed out
A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control can point to a Bluetooth hardware error rather than an Airplane mode setting. Device-specific drivers or firmware may also be involved. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer for guidance specific to the computer model. See Microsoft’s guidance for Bluetooth that disappears in Windows.
The Airplane mode toggle is unavailable
If the Settings toggle itself is unavailable, the documentation cited here does not establish one universal cause or fix. Check the PC manufacturer’s support information for model-specific wireless hardware or driver guidance rather than treating it as a normal toggle-state issue.
