To turn a text prompt into a playable game, use Google’s Playground: describe the game you want, select Generate, then refine the compiled result with conversational instructions. You can keep a game private, share a link, publish it to Playground’s gallery, or export its source files. Access to creation depends on availability and your Google account or plan.
How do I create a game on Playground?
Playground is Google’s prompt-based game creation platform. Google announced it on October 7, 2026, as an early experiment for making and playing custom games without coding. It is separate from Project Genie, Google’s research prototype for generating and exploring interactive environments.
- Open Playground’s creation screen. Enter a plain-language description of the game you want and select Generate. Guided creation options are available, and you can upload reference photos to influence the visual style. Google’s Playground announcement describes the platform; the Playground Help Center documents its creation workflow.
- Wait for generation and compilation. Processing time varies with traffic and prompt complexity. Generation credits are held when you start; they are permanently deducted only if the game successfully compiles and becomes playable. Failed or timed-out generations are automatically refunded, according to Playground Help.
- Play the result and request focused changes. Use conversational directions to refine gameplay logic, graphics, or rules. Google recommends asking for clear, focused changes instead of combining many complex requests in one instruction. Review each result and then make the next adjustment.
- Choose what happens to the game. Keep it as a draft, set its visibility, publish it, or export its files. The visibility options documented in Help are draft, private, listed, and unlisted. Listed games can be discovered; anyone with the unique link can play an unlisted game. If you edit a published game, those changes remain in draft until you publish again.
Google says published games undergo safety screening aligned with Playground Community Guidelines, and users can report games. For more detail on the publishing controls and export, see the Playground Help Center.
What should I include in the prompt?
Describe a game the system can generate, not just a theme. State what the player does, what counts as success or failure, and the visual direction. For example: “Make a top-down maze game where I collect three keys, avoid a patrolling robot, and reach the exit. Use a bright pixel-art style.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a guaranteed recipe; Playground’s documentation does not promise that every requested mechanic or detail will appear exactly as written.

- Start with the core loop: say what the player does repeatedly, such as dodge obstacles, solve a puzzle, or collect items.
- Give the objective and rules: describe the win condition and any important constraint, such as a timer or limited lives.
- Specify the presentation: mention a perspective or art style, and use a reference photo if it would help convey the look.
- Iterate in small steps: after the game compiles, ask for one clear gameplay, visual, or rules change at a time.
Google’s separate prompt guide concerns Genie 3, not Playground, so its advice should not be treated as a tested Playground formula. Genie 3’s documented limitations—including prompt adherence, control, latency, and stream quality—also apply to Genie rather than establishing limitations of Playground.
How do I edit an existing game?
Open the game in Playground and use conversational instructions to change it. You can request changes to gameplay logic, graphics, and rules; focused requests make it easier to see what each edit does. If the game has already been published, edits stay in draft until you publish the updated version. The Playground Help Center covers editing and publishing.

Can I make a multiplayer game?
Yes. Choose the multiplayer option in the initial generation chat. Google Help describes both turn-based and real-time multiplayer as early-preview features. Platform-wide global leaderboards are not available for multiplayer games, according to the Playground Help Center. Google’s launch announcement described multiplayer as limited to select genres, so do not assume every game concept can use it.
How can I share, publish, or export a game?

Playground’s documented visibility choices are draft, private, listed, and unlisted. Listed games are discoverable in the catalog; unlisted games are accessible to anyone who has the unique link. You can also keep a game private. Published games undergo safety screening aligned with Playground Community Guidelines, and players can report them, according to Google’s launch announcement.

Export the files
Playground Help documents a ZIP export containing HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and generated assets. That gives you the game files; the documentation cited here does not establish that exporting provides a complete, production-ready development workflow. Consult the Help Center for the current export controls.
Who can use Playground?
At launch, Google said Playground was available in the United States to people aged 18 or older, with creation access rolling out according to Google AI subscription tier. The Playground Help Center says U.S. adults can browse and play the catalog; free-tier users can join a waitlist for creation access in rolling batches, while a Google One AI plan was listed as a route to immediate creation access. Availability and plan terms can change, so check the current Playground Help Center before relying on a particular access route. No current price is established here.

Is Playground the same as Project Genie?
No. Playground is documented for generating games, editing gameplay, publishing, and exporting game source files. Project Genie is a separate Google Labs research prototype focused on generating and exploring interactive environments. Its product materials describe environments that users can explore, not Playground’s documented game publishing and source-export workflow. See Google DeepMind’s Genie page and the Playground Help Center for the distinction.
Google also announced Unity Spark as a future integration intended to support more advanced mechanics, high-fidelity 3D, and the Unity runtime. In the announcement, it was still in testing, with a closed beta described as coming soon; it should not be treated as a feature available to every Playground user. Google’s announcement provides that status.
