The quickest way to turn a Google Sheet into a website is Google’s built-in File > Share > Publish to web command. You can publish the whole spreadsheet or one tab, then share Google’s public URL or paste its generated embed code into a site you already own. The result is a view-only web presentation—not a private, user-specific portal. If you need branded pages, logins, workflows, or an app-like mobile interface, use Google Sites, a no-code builder, or the Sheets API instead.
What “turn a Google Sheet into a website” can mean
There are four different outcomes, and choosing the right one prevents problems later:
| Outcome | Best route | What visitors get |
|---|---|---|
| Public, read-only spreadsheet view | Google Sheets Publish to web | A Google-hosted URL showing values, formatting and charts |
| Sheet displayed inside a site | Publish to web, then Embed | An iframe-like sheet area in your existing page or blog |
| Simple site containing a sheet | Google Sites | A Google Sites page with embedded Sheets content |
| Branded directory, portal or app | Softr, Glide, a Sheets-to-site add-on, or custom code | A designed interface, potentially with navigation, forms or differentiated access |
Google’s native publisher is the right answer when readers only need to browse information. It does not give them the normal editing controls, and it should not be treated as a secure customer portal.
Publish a Google Sheet as a web page
- Open the spreadsheet on a computer.
- Choose File > Share > Publish to web.
- In the publishing dialog, choose Entire spreadsheet or a specific sheet tab.
- Select the available format, such as a web page or another offered output.
- Click Publish and confirm.
- Copy the public URL and test it in a private browser window before sharing it.
Publishing creates a separate web presentation of the source. Visitors see cell values, formatting and charts, but not the source sheet’s editing interface. Formulas are represented by their resulting values rather than as an editing experience.

Publish only one tab
Selecting a single sheet is safer for a focused page such as a price list or event calendar. It also reduces the chance that an unrelated tab—such as an internal notes tab—will be exposed. Review every tab and chart before choosing Entire spreadsheet.
Use the generated embed code
Choose Embed in the publish dialog and copy the HTML Google provides. Paste it into the HTML editor of your site, CMS or blog. The generated code is the most reliable starting point because it contains the correct document and sheet identifiers.
Google documents optional embed parameters including:
gidto identify a particular sheet tabrangeto limit the displayed cellswidget, headersandchrometo control parts of the display
Only edit those parameters if your host allows the required HTML and you have tested the result on desktop and mobile. A site builder that strips iframe or query-string attributes may require its dedicated embed block instead.

- Publish the spreadsheet first using File > Share > Publish to web.
- Open your Google Site in edit mode.
- In the right-side Insert panel, choose the Sheets option or the option to embed content.
- Select the spreadsheet or paste its published URL, then place and resize the element.
- Publish the Google Site and open the public site in a private window.
Publishing the Site does not automatically make a restricted source available to everyone. The sheet’s own sharing and publication settings still apply. If visitors see an access request, check both the Site publication and the spreadsheet’s published view.
Control visibility before you publish
Treat publishing as a data-release decision. Google’s settings can allow a published item to be visible to everyone on the web, to people in an organization, or to a defined group, depending on the account and Workspace policies. A managed Workspace administrator or shared-drive policy may restrict publication.

- Remove private names, email addresses, internal comments and hidden-looking tabs before publishing.
- Inspect charts: Google warns that a published chart can reveal the data behind it.
- Open the public URL while signed out. If it works only when you are logged in, it is not public to ordinary visitors.
- Do not describe the result as a permission-aware portal. Anyone who can reach the published view receives the same presentation.
Keep the published page updated—or take it down
Google Docs Editors Help says, “Any changes you make to the original document will be updated in the published version. The automatic update might take a few minutes.” That delay matters for live prices, schedules and inventory: update the source, wait for propagation, then verify the public URL.
Use the spreadsheet’s Published content & settings panel to adjust automatic republishing or select Stop publishing. Stopping publication removes the published view; changing ordinary collaborator sharing is a separate action and does not replace that step.
When native publishing is not enough
Google Sites
Choose this for a small site that combines a sheet with text, navigation and other Google files. The sheet remains embedded content with its own permissions.
Softr
Softr describes Google Sheets as a data source for branded portals, directories, dashboards and app blocks, with permissions and two-way synchronization. Those are vendor-described capabilities; confirm current limits, access rules and pricing before committing.
Glide
Glide describes connecting a Google Sheet to a customizable, mobile-friendly app that can be published and shared. It is a better fit for an app experience than for a simple spreadsheet embed. Check the current data-source and plan requirements.
Sheets to Site Marketplace add-on
The Google Workspace Marketplace listing describes spreadsheet-driven listings, directories and pages that can be embedded in other site builders. Verify the listing’s current availability, permissions and service terms before using it.

Google Sheets API
Use the API when your application needs to read or write data, apply its own templates, or enforce application-specific logic. The requesting application’s permissions determine what it can access. You must build the web interface, authentication and error handling yourself.
Choose the approach by reader access and interface
| Question | Native publish | Builder or custom app |
|---|---|---|
| Do all visitors see the same information? | Good fit | Useful only if you need a richer presentation |
| Do users need different records or roles? | Not a secure portal | Use a service with access controls or implement them in code |
| Must the page look like your brand? | Limited spreadsheet presentation | Builders and custom code provide more control |
| Must Sheets remain the data source? | Yes | Check each product’s current sync and plan rules |
| Do you need forms, workflows or app navigation? | No | Use a builder or the Sheets API |
| Are you comfortable coding? | No code required | API route requires implementation and permission handling |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture the finished sheet or any published page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts a URL, can output PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, and is designed for automated captures rather than manually configuring a browser.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_PUBLISHED_ID/pubhtml -o sheet.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_PUBLISHED_ID/pubhtml"}, timeout=90)
open("sheet.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_PUBLISHED_ID/pubhtml' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for output and options. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Troubleshooting
The page says access denied
The source or published view is restricted, or Workspace policy blocks public sharing. Recheck Publish to web, test while signed out, and ask an administrator about organization or shared-drive restrictions.
An old value is still visible
Automatic propagation can take a few minutes. Confirm that you edited the source spreadsheet, not a copied file, then reload the published URL after waiting.
A private tab appeared on the site
You published the entire spreadsheet. Stop publishing, remove the sensitive tab or create a clean copy, then publish only the intended sheet.

The embed is blank
Your site builder may strip embed HTML, the URL may be a normal edit link rather than the published URL, or a content-security policy may block it. Recopy Google’s generated embed code and use the builder’s native embed component.
The chart exposes more than expected
Review the source range and underlying cells. Google warns that published charts can reveal their data; create a sanitized chart or sheet before republishing.
The API application cannot read the data
Check the spreadsheet and application permissions, authentication scopes and the specific sheet or range requested. API access follows the requesting application’s permissions; it does not bypass them.
Practical checklist
- Decide whether you need a view, an embed, a branded site or an app.
- Remove confidential tabs and inspect chart source data.
- Publish the whole file or one tab deliberately.
- Test the URL signed out and on a phone.
- Document who owns the source and who can stop publication.
- After edits, allow for propagation and verify important values.
- Use Stop publishing when the public view is no longer needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can visitors edit a sheet published to the web?
No. The published presentation is intended for viewing; editing requires access to the original spreadsheet and its separate sharing permissions.
Can I publish just a selected range?
Yes, an embed can use Google’s documented range parameter, although the generated embed code is the safest starting point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill publishing a Google Sheet expose its formulas?
The web presentation shows the resulting values and presentation rather than providing the source sheet’s normal formula-editing interface.
Is a published sheet suitable for confidential customer data?
No. Use a permission-aware application or portal for differentiated access, and publish only data that is appropriate for the selected audience.
