To tune an unfamiliar filament, start with the manufacturer’s temperature guidance and calibrate one setting at a time. OrcaSlicer’s documented order is temperature, maximum volumetric speed, pressure advance, flow ratio, then retraction. Use the results to build a profile for the particular printer, nozzle, and spool—not a universal preset.
Before you start: choose a baseline and record the setup
Identify the filament material and read the maker’s recommended nozzle and bed temperature ranges. In your slicer, choose the closest available printer and material preset as a starting point, not as a guaranteed match. A value that works for another printer, filament brand, color, or spool may not work for yours.
Record the printer, nozzle, filament brand and material, color and spool, test temperatures, and resulting settings. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which adjustment affected the print. OrcaSlicer’s Calibration Guide lays out the sequence below.
1. Calibrate nozzle temperature
Begin with temperature because it affects filament viscosity, flow, and bed adhesion. Stay within the manufacturer’s recommended range and use a temperature test to find a useful setting for your printer and filament combination. There is no single nozzle temperature established for every material, printer, or brand, so do not assume a preset or a temperature copied from another setup is correct.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Keep the bed temperature within the filament maker’s guidance as well. If adhesion is poor, check the first layer and printer condition before treating nozzle temperature as the only possible cause.
2. Find the maximum volumetric speed
Maximum volumetric speed limits how quickly the printer attempts to melt and extrude the material. Calibrate it after temperature: the test helps identify whether the printer can sustain the intended material flow without under-extrusion. Do not transfer a speed limit from a different printer-and-filament combination as though it were universal.

3. Calibrate pressure advance if your printer supports it
Pressure advance compensates for pressure lag in the nozzle as the toolhead accelerates and decelerates. A suitable value can reduce blobs and inconsistent extrusion at corners. OrcaSlicer documents tower, pattern, and line tests; use the test variant that matches the printer’s extrusion arrangement, such as direct drive or Bowden.
Check firmware support before running or saving a value. OrcaSlicer notes that Marlin printers need Linear Advance enabled in firmware for the relevant feature. Prusa’s Linear Advance documentation describes Linear Advance on older MK2/MK3 families and Pressure Advance on specified newer families from firmware 5.0.0 onward. The names and availability depend on the printer and firmware; do not assume every machine supports the same calibration.

4. Tune flow ratio (extrusion multiplier)
Flow ratio, also called extrusion multiplier in some slicers, proportionally changes how much filament is extruded. After temperature, volumetric speed, and pressure advance are established, calibrate flow for the material. OrcaSlicer recommends a flow-ratio calibration range of 0.95 to 1.05; this is a test reference, not a guaranteed final value. Its material settings documentation covers flow ratio and pressure advance.
Prusa describes extrusion multiplier as an advanced fine-tuning step. Its calibration guidance says adjustments are usually between 0.9 and 1.1 in that context, and notes that the ideal setting can vary by material, color, and even spool. Prusa documents both a visual approach and a precision-tool approach; measurement tools are optional, not required. See Prusa’s extrusion multiplier calibration guide.

- 【Spool Diameter】- Spool Diameter: 8.00", Spool Width: 2.50", Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.20". The size of the SUNLU filament spool is suitable for hanging on many 3D printers.
Keep track of where flow is being changed. If you adjust both the slicer multiplier and firmware flow, their combined effect can be difficult to interpret. Make one change at a time and record it.

Retraction addresses stringing and extrusion behavior during travel moves. OrcaSlicer places it after flow and pressure advance in its calibration sequence. Use the test that matches your printer’s extrusion setup; the pressure-advance test documentation also distinguishes direct-drive and Bowden variants. Avoid treating another printer’s retraction value as a ready-made setting for yours.

Save the result as a material profile
Once tests are complete, save the calibrated values in the filament or material profile so they stay associated with that material. OrcaSlicer identifies flow ratio and pressure advance as filament settings. Keep your recorded setup details with the profile, especially when a later spool or material variation needs its own adjustment.
If the calibration prints still look wrong
- Confirm the pressure-advance or Linear Advance feature is available and enabled for your printer and firmware before changing its value.
- Check that the calibration test matches the printer’s direct-drive or Bowden arrangement where applicable.
- Verify the first layer and general printer condition before repeatedly changing material settings.
- Return to the last recorded working value if a new adjustment makes results worse, then test a single variable again.
Prusa notes that extrusion multiplier calibration is not necessary with a new printer straight from the factory; it is intended for specific applications and filaments. For a new material on an established setup, calibration is useful when the print results warrant fine-tuning.
