There is no universal iPhone or Mac setting that makes every Switch game run at a steady 60 fps. The best starting point depends on whether you mean an actual emulator or nxnative, which builds separate native Apple apps for supported games and explicitly is not an emulator. On Mac, Ryubing recommends starting with its pre-optimized defaults, shader cache enabled, and native resolution. On iPhone, MeloNX requires JIT; nxnative follows a separate, game-specific build process with its own device and Mac requirements. In either case, a 60 fps menu option is a target or supported profile—not proof of sustained 60 fps.
What should you try first?
Start with the path that matches your device and software, then change one setting at a time in the same game and scene. Keep a record of the original values so you can revert if performance, image quality, or controls get worse.
- Mac running Ryubing: leave settings at their defaults, keep shader cache enabled, begin at native resolution, and compare handheld and docked modes in the game you want to play.
- iPhone running MeloNX: verify the JIT, sideloading, and memory prerequisites before adjusting graphics. The documented settings do not establish one reliable 60 fps configuration for every iPhone or game.
- iPhone or Mac running an
nxnativebuild: use only the supported game-specific profile, begin with its tested defaults, and select 60 fps only if that profile offers the option.
Do not apply a setting from one of these projects to another as if they were interchangeable. The applications, requirements, and meaning of their performance options differ.
Is nxnative a Switch emulator?
No. nxnative creates a separate native Apple app for each supported game; its project describes the approach as native execution, not emulation. This distinction matters because its build requirements and game-specific profiles are not emulator settings you can transfer to Ryubing or MeloNX.

For a native build, begin in the game’s settings screen or the Mac launch window with the project’s tested defaults. If a 60 fps option is present for that title, choose it and enable the FPS counter or performance HUD while diagnosing. If the game does not hold its target, test handheld mode or a lower render scale if the profile supports it. If either change causes glitches or fails to help, restore the tested defaults.
The project’s notes list The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with update 1.9.0 and Tears of the Kingdom with update 1.4.3 among its 60 fps examples. Those are project-reported, game- and update-specific notes—not independent benchmarks or a promise that those titles will sustain 60 fps on every device. Check the current per-game notes for the exact game and update you intend to use.
What does an nxnative build require?
The documented build workflow has demanding prerequisites. The project specifies an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 26 or later, and a Mac running macOS 26.6 or later with Xcode 27.1, Homebrew, and Python 3.12 or newer. Requirements and supported titles can change, so consult the project’s current documentation before starting; these are not requirements for Ryubing or MeloNX.

A physical game purchase does not itself provide a ready-to-use game file. File preparation and circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction, so do not assume that every copying method is lawful. Use only files and methods you are legally entitled to use; this guide does not provide game downloads or instructions for obtaining keys or firmware.
Which nxnative settings are worth changing?
Change only an option that addresses a specific problem, and compare it against the tested default. A higher frame-rate target, lower rendering load, smoother delivery, and responsive controls are separate goals; improving one can affect another.

Frame-rate target and handheld mode
A 60 fps target is useful only when the game profile exposes it and the device can deliver it consistently. If performance is unstable, try handheld mode or a lower supported render scale, one at a time. The project documents DM_OPMODE=0 for handheld mode. Its documentation also gives DM_FPS_TARGET=30 for certain games when conserving battery; that is a title-specific option, not a universal value to apply to every game.
Settings files and overrides
On Mac, the documented settings file is ~/Library/Application Support/nxnative/<title ID>/env.txt. On iPhone, overrides in Documents/env.txt take precedence over the settings screen. These paths and variables belong to this project only. If an override appears not to match the in-game setting, check for a conflicting iPhone override, then return to the profile’s defaults before troubleshooting further.
Frame buffering, latency, and upscaling
NX2Apple says frame buffering may improve frame delivery but can add input latency. Its documentation reports a project-specific comparison for Breath of the Wild on an iPhone 17 Pro Max: 60 fps with buffering versus 30 fps without it, with about 28 ms of additional input latency in that comparison. The documentation does not supply a publication year for those figures. Treat them as a project-reported example for that device and game, not a general result for other titles or phones.
If controls feel delayed, compare the tested default with buffering off and watch both responsiveness and the FPS counter. Do not assume the higher displayed frame rate automatically feels better in play.
The project describes MetalFX as an upscaling option, not a guaranteed speed boost. It can affect GPU time and heat. If a lower render scale looks too soft and the device has performance headroom, compare Standard and MetalFX for that game. Otherwise, keep the tested default. Revert any change that produces glitches, excessive heat, or an image-quality trade-off you do not want.

What are the best Mac settings in Ryubing?
Ryubing’s setup guide says the emulator “comes pre-optimized by default.” For a first pass, leave undocumented tweaks alone, keep the shader cache on, and start at native resolution. Its guide says the shader cache is enabled by default and advises against disabling it outside testing.

- Use native resolution as your baseline. Change resolution only after comparing the game in a repeatable scene and identifying rendering load as a likely constraint.
- Compare handheld and docked modes. Try both in the same game and scene. Docked mode may trigger a game’s higher-fidelity or higher-FPS behavior, but it can also demand more rendering work. It is not inherently faster on every Mac.
- Give shader compilation time to settle. Initial stutter can be related to shader compilation. Compare a first run with a repeat run before concluding that a setting change improved performance.
- Change one graphics option at a time. If you lower resolution, compare image clarity as well as frame delivery. Return to the baseline if the change does not help or creates a visual problem.

How do I set up Switch emulation on an iPhone?
First identify which project you plan to use. MeloNX documents actual emulation and requires JIT; nxnative is a different, game-specific native-execution route with the prerequisites described above. Their installation steps and performance settings are not interchangeable.
MeloNX: resolve JIT and installation requirements first
MeloNX’s documented iOS path requires JIT and includes sideloading and memory prerequisites. Confirm that the specific installation can meet those requirements before spending time on graphics options. The repository lists resolution and shader-cache settings, but the researched documentation does not establish a universal 60 fps setup or a dependable result across iPhone models and games. Avoid turning the project’s recommended phone or a setting in its menu into a claim that all supported games will hold 60 fps.
Once the app’s prerequisites are met, change resolution or shader-cache settings only to diagnose a particular issue, and compare one change at a time. If a game stutters, looks worse, or becomes unstable, restore its prior values. The available documentation does not support prescribing a fixed resolution or cache configuration as best for every iPhone.

Apple Game Mode and battery settings
Apple says Game Mode reduces background activity and improves Bluetooth latency for supported full-screen games. Check that it actually activates for the specific app; it is a system behavior benefit, not a way to remove a game’s frame-rate cap or guarantee 60 fps. Apple’s description is a statement about the feature, not a performance measurement for these Switch projects.
Low Power Mode is intended to extend battery life, not to maximize frame rate. If your priority is sustained play on battery, compare the experience with the relevant power setting in mind, but do not treat Low Power Mode as an FPS recommendation.
How can you tell whether a game is really running at 60 fps?
A 60 fps selection in a menu shows that a target or option was selected; it does not show that the game sustains that rate. Use the project’s FPS counter or performance HUD when available, observe a repeatable gameplay scene, and distinguish a short peak from consistent delivery. Check the exact game, update version, device, and mode as well as the displayed number.
Also pay attention to the experience around the number. A lower render scale may improve frame delivery at the cost of image sharpness; buffering may affect control latency; more demanding rendering can increase heat or battery use. If a setting improves one metric while making another unacceptable, it may not be the best setting for your priorities.

The reviewed project documentation does not establish what percentage of Switch games run at 60 fps on iPhone or Mac, a universally fastest Mac chip, or a controlled ranking of settings across devices. There is no sound basis here for a blanket claim that a particular iPhone, Mac, or mode is the fastest for every game.

How should you choose between the options?
| Your setup or goal | Start here | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mac with Ryubing | Defaults, shader cache on, native resolution | Compare handheld and docked in the same scene; account for first-run shader stutter. |
| iPhone with MeloNX | Meet JIT, sideloading, and memory prerequisites before graphics changes | Confirm the game’s actual performance; documentation does not establish a universal 60 fps configuration. |
| iPhone or Mac with an nxnative build | Game-specific tested defaults; choose 60 fps only when offered | Confirm supported game and update, then diagnose with the HUD and supported profile options. |
| Lower latency is more important than a displayed frame target | Start with the project’s tested default buffering behavior | Compare controls and frame delivery; buffering may add latency. |
| Longer battery life is the priority | Use the game’s documented battery-conscious option where available | The project documents a 30 fps target for certain games; Low Power Mode is not an FPS setting. |
What should you do if performance is worse after a change?
Undo the most recent change first, then compare against the documented default in the same scene. This avoids stacking changes that hide the cause.
- Stutter mainly on the first run: on Ryubing, consider shader compilation before disabling shader cache; the guide recommends leaving the cache enabled outside testing.
- Lower performance after switching to docked: compare handheld again. Docked mode can increase rendering demand even if it enables a game’s higher-fidelity behavior.
- Soft image after a resolution change: restore the previous scale or compare supported upscaling choices only if there is performance headroom.
- Delayed controls after enabling buffering: compare with buffering off and the game’s tested default; a higher FPS display does not settle the latency question.
- Unexpected nxnative behavior: restore the tested profile defaults and check whether an iPhone
Documents/env.txtoverride is taking precedence over the settings screen. - MeloNX will not run as expected: check JIT and installation prerequisites before changing resolution or cache settings.
Keep the game and update version in view throughout troubleshooting. A setting supported by one profile or update may not apply to another.
What is the practical recommendation?
For Mac Ryubing, the sensible baseline is defaults, shader cache on, native resolution, and a controlled handheld-versus-docked comparison. For iPhone MeloNX, resolve JIT and installation prerequisites first; do not expect one graphics preset to guarantee 60 fps. For nxnative, use the supported game’s tested defaults and treat its 60 fps options and measurements as project-specific. In every path, judge the result in the game itself rather than by the selected menu value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying a physical Switch game give me a file I can load on an iPhone or Mac?
No. A physical purchase is not itself a ready-to-use game file, and the projects ask users to supply files and, where applicable, keys and firmware. The legality of copying or circumvention methods depends on jurisdiction and method, so do not assume every approach is lawful.
Can I copy an nxnative settings file from one game to another?
Do not assume that a profile or override is portable: nxnative is game-specific, and its documented settings path includes a title ID. Check the per-game notes and use that title’s supported defaults rather than importing another game’s values.
Will a Bluetooth controller make Switch emulation faster?
No; a controller affects input, not the emulator’s rendering workload or a game’s frame-rate target. NX2Apple documents support for a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, but compatibility with a particular setup should be checked in the project’s current documentation.
Why can an FPS counter show 60 while the game still feels uneven?
A displayed rate may not capture every short slowdown or explain input delay, frame pacing, or heat-related changes during a longer session. Compare a repeatable scene and how controls respond rather than relying on one menu selection or momentary reading.
