For clearer visibility in a realistic first-person shooter, tune settings in the game you actually play: begin with your display’s native resolution, turn off blur if it hides motion, and adjust brightness, field of view, anti-aliasing and detail settings in small steps. Check both enemy readability and frame-rate stability in representative gameplay after each change. There is no universal “best settings” preset because games render effects differently and hardware and displays vary.

Start with a reliable display baseline

Before changing graphics quality, confirm that the game is using the display you intend and start at its native resolution and aspect ratio. If the game offers a refresh-rate choice, select an appropriate option for your display. These controls are often grouped under Display, but menu names and available settings vary by game. Activision’s 2019 Modern Warfare PC guide is an example of a Display section that includes monitor, refresh rate, render resolution, aspect ratio, V-Sync and frame limits; its menu details should not be treated as current instructions for other games.

Use this baseline so later comparisons are meaningful. Lowering render resolution may increase performance, but it can also make small or distant targets harder to distinguish. Change it only when you have a specific performance reason, then assess visibility in the game.

Adjust settings that directly affect what you see

Brightness: reveal shadows without washing out the scene

Raise brightness modestly if enemies disappear into dark areas, then check that bright areas still retain detail and the overall scene remains readable. Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends PC settings guidance says to increase brightness slightly for visibility. That is a game-specific starting point, not a universal calibration value; use the game’s own brightness test if it provides one.

Motion blur: test it off if movement obscures targets

Turn off world, camera or weapon motion blur as an initial competitive-visibility test if movement makes enemies or attacks difficult to track. NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 PC graphics guide suggests disabling motion blur in competitive PvP Crucible matches for visibility. Activision’s Modern Warfare guide also illustrates that world and weapon blur may have separate toggles. The available controls depend on the game; NVIDIA reported no performance impact from the Destiny 2 toggle in its tested context, so do not assume disabling blur will raise frame rate.

Field of view: balance awareness against target size

A wider field of view (FOV) shows more of the surroundings, but makes distant opponents appear smaller. Increase or reduce FOV in small increments and compare peripheral awareness with the size and readability of distant targets. EA recommends 90–110 as a starting range for Apex Legends, and says 110 is common among competitive players; it also notes that preference and platform matter. This is guidance for Apex Legends, not a recommended range for every shooter.

Choose detail settings for both clarity and stable performance

When frame delivery is unstable or effects make the scene visually busy, test demanding or distracting options such as shadows, volumetric lighting, effects and ambient occlusion. EA’s competitive-oriented Apex Legends suggestions put several such options at low or disabled, and its guidance says to use the settings as a starting point. It also says to run Apex Legends at the lowest graphics settings possible if maximizing performance or FPS is the goal. That performance-focused advice does not mean the lowest preset will be clearest for every player or hardware configuration.

Keep a setting higher if it helps separate an opponent from the background and your system renders it smoothly. For each change, assess the same practical questions:

Compare anti-aliasing instead of assuming it should be on or off

Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, but different methods can affect fine texture and small-detail sharpness differently. Compare the modes available in your game while looking at edges and distant targets both when still and in motion. NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 guide describes SMAA as clearer than FXAA in its comparisons and reports setting costs of 1.7 FPS for SMAA and 0.5 FPS for FXAA in that guide’s specific context. Those figures are not current benchmarks for other games or hardware. EA lists anti-aliasing as None in its competitive Apex Legends starting recommendations; that does not establish that disabling it is clearest in other titles.

Use a repeatable tuning loop

  1. Record your starting point. Note resolution, display mode, refresh rate, FOV, brightness, anti-aliasing, blur and the detail settings you plan to test.
  2. Pick a representative scene. Use a practice area or repeatable gameplay situation with near and distant targets, shadows and movement where possible.
  3. Change one setting or a small related group. For example, test motion blur separately from anti-aliasing so you can tell which change affected readability.
  4. Check visibility and performance. Look for readable targets, stable image detail and smooth frame delivery. Do not attribute a gain to a setting unless you measured it on your own system.
  5. Keep, revert or refine the change. If a setting improves one part of visibility but hurts another, adjust it in smaller steps or restore the baseline. Repeat until the balance suits the game and display.

EA recommends lowering a few Apex Legends options at a time when seeking performance, while Riot Games’ graphics-performance guidance recommends testing between adjustments and gradually raising settings to restore the preferred visual balance. Riot’s support page appeared in search results as published October 7, 2026; its page text is not relied on here for a specific setting recommendation.

Why a universal FPS preset does not work

Settings with the same name can have different visual effects and performance costs across games. Even official recommendations differ: EA’s Apex Legends competitive starting point uses no anti-aliasing and low shadows, while NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 guide describes cases where anti-aliasing improves edge clarity and can help preserve detail. The useful choice depends on each game’s implementation, your resolution and hardware, and what you can distinguish during play. Tune the title you play rather than copying another game’s preset.
