Find the demo through the game’s official store listing, check what it includes and whether your PC meets the published requirements, then install and test it using the store’s own controls. A demo can help you judge the parts it contains; it does not guarantee the full game will have the same content or performance. Not every PC game offers one.
1. Find the demo through an official store listing
Search for the game in the PC storefront used by its publisher and open the game’s listing. If a demo is available, use the listing’s demo button or follow its link to the separate demo page. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains that demos may appear on the full game’s page or have their own page. Microsoft also provides a PC game demos catalog for its Ireland storefront.
Availability varies by game and store. No demo does not, by itself, indicate that a game is unsafe; it simply means this try-before-buy option is not available there.
2. Check that the demo is the right sample
Read the demo’s own description before installing. Check which content, features, languages and player modes it includes, and note any stated limits. A feature shown on the full game’s page may not be part of the demo: Steam’s documentation distinguishes the demo’s information from the full game’s features.

3. Compare the requirements with your PC
Compare your computer with the game’s published minimum and recommended system requirements before downloading. Bohemia Interactive also recommends checking requirements, reading player forums and trying an available demo before buying in its support guidance. Requirements and other players’ reports provide context, not a guarantee that the game will perform the same way on your particular PC.
4. Download and install from the official source
- Use the download or install control on the official storefront’s game or demo listing.
- If the publisher’s official site links to the demo listing, follow that link to the store and install it there.
- Avoid demo executables, archives or access links sent by strangers or hosted on unrelated file-sharing sites. Bohemia Interactive warns against buying games from unofficial CD-key stores or unreliable resellers; its statement concerns its own support and should not be treated as a policy for every publisher.
Using an official listing is a sensible sourcing practice, not an absolute security guarantee. If you encounter a malware or security warning, do not bypass it on the strength of this guide; consult the storefront or publisher’s official support. Steam’s guidance on spyware, malware, adware or viruses interfering with Steam is one official support resource.

5. Test the parts that matter to you
Play enough of the sample to assess the core gameplay and the specific things that will shape your purchase decision. For example, check whether the controls feel right and whether performance—including frame pacing—works acceptably on your system. Try an important mode or feature only if the demo actually includes it.
- Notice where the sample ends and what it leaves out.
- Do not assume the demo covers every mode, late-game system or other feature advertised for the full release.
- Treat the demo as evidence about the portion you played, not a guarantee of the full game’s exact content or performance.
6. Decide whether to buy—or use a fallback
If the demo is unavailable, use the official store description and published system requirements, along with player feedback, to inform your decision. Those sources can help, but they cannot reproduce how the game runs on your own PC.

A refund policy is different from a free demo: you must buy the game first, and eligibility depends on the store’s rules. Valve’s Steam refund guidance says a game or software title may be requested for a refund within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours. Valve says requests outside those conditions can still be submitted for review. This is Steam-specific guidance, not a promise for other PC stores, and policies can change; check the store’s current terms before purchasing.
