If a Zcash testnet wallet or node will not sync, first confirm that the wallet, node, and any lightwalletd service are all using Testnet. Then check the node’s sync status and peer connection before investigating wallet scanning or the lightwalletd cache. These are separate layers: a wallet can be healthy while its backend is unreachable or still catching up.
Identify which part of the setup is not syncing
Zcash Testnet is a separate blockchain that imitates mainnet for testing; testnet coins are not real ZEC and have no value. The Zcash Testnet Guide describes it as an alternative blockchain for testing.
Determine whether the wallet connects to a full node running on your computer or uses a lightwalletd backend. A local full-node wallet depends on the node syncing and the wallet scanning its data. A light wallet depends on both the wallet-to-lightwalletd connection and lightwalletd’s connection to its backend node. lightwalletd is a bandwidth-efficient backend for mobile and other light wallets.
- If the node’s height is not advancing or it has no peers, troubleshoot the node and network connection first.
- If the node is synced but the wallet is not, check the wallet’s selected network, scan progress, and backend connection.
- If you operate lightwalletd, check its service status, reported chain and height, and logs separately from the wallet.
Confirm every component is configured for Testnet
Check the network setting in the wallet, node, and lightwalletd backend. A mismatch can make a running service appear unreachable or make the wallet display data from the wrong chain. If you change a zebrad backend from mainnet to testnet or vice versa, restart lightwalletd; its project README requires a restart after changing the network.

The documented Zcash port pairs are:

These are the documented ports in the Zcash troubleshooting guide; a port number alone does not prove that a service is syncing correctly. For peer problems, verify outbound connectivity and the local firewall policy for the selected P2P port. Do not expose the RPC port publicly as a shortcut: the lightwalletd project says RPC should not be exposed beyond localhost.
Check node sync and peer connectivity first
Wait for the node to finish syncing on the intended network before diagnosing a wallet-facing service. Compare its current height and peer count with what the node reports over time; a node that is still catching up can leave a connected wallet behind. If the node has no peers, investigate network access and firewall rules for the P2P port rather than changing wallet data.

Use the node logs to identify concrete failures. The Zcash troubleshooting guide notes that an error mentioning sprout-verifying.key can mean required proof parameters have not been fetched. For Debian package installs, it documents zcash-fetch-params; for source builds, it documents ./zcutil/fetch-params.sh.
Errors such as std::bad_alloc indicate memory exhaustion, which the guide particularly associates with mining or shielded transactions. Imported-key operations can also appear stalled: importing a key may trigger an immediate blockchain scan for related transactions, delaying the command response.

Check lightwalletd and its backend connection
If the node is synced but a light wallet still cannot catch up, check both sides of the backend. Confirm that lightwalletd is running, connects to the intended network’s node, and that the wallet is pointed at the intended lightwalletd endpoint.
Use the documented GetLightdInfo gRPC health request against the lightwalletd service. A successful response reports the chain name, block height, and backend node version; the project documentation says it also confirms the gRPC frontend and its connection to zebrad. Compare the returned chain and height with the network you intend to use and the backend node’s own status.

Allow for initial cache filling
lightwalletd keeps a block cache that it can regenerate from the node. In the setup described by its README, the first cache sync takes about an hour, and block fetches are slower until it completes. That is a documented observation for that setup, not a general time guarantee.
If lightwalletd logs report CORRUPTION, the project says it checks cache consistency and repairs it by redownloading blocks from the backend. The official setup guide also says that stopping the server and deleting its cache causes the cache to be downloaded again. This concerns lightwalletd’s server cache, not wallet keys or seed data. Do not delete wallet files or seed data to troubleshoot a backend cache.

Check whether a legacy zcashd node is still supported
As of the official Zcash notice, zcashd support halted at block height 3,417,100 on July 18, 2026, and zcashd is deprecated and will not support NU6.3. The notice lists Testnet NU6.3 activation as July 4, 2026, at block 4,134,000. If a legacy zcashd node appears stalled around this transition, check the current official support notice and release guidance rather than assuming the problem is a wallet setting.
The same notice advises users who do not need the zcashd wallet to migrate to Zebra. Users who depend on the zcashd wallet are advised to begin testing migration of wallet.dat to Zallet. Confirm the current official migration guidance before acting on wallet data.
Collect useful details before asking for help
When the cause is still unclear, provide enough diagnostic information for someone to distinguish a network mismatch from a backend or wallet issue:
- Wallet name and version, operating system, and whether the wallet is set to Testnet.
- Node implementation and version, configured RPC and P2P endpoints, current node height, and peer count.
- Wallet height or displayed sync status, and whether lightwalletd is local or remote.
- The GetLightdInfo response, if available, and relevant log excerpts with timestamps.
- What you already tried and what happened, as requested by the Zcash troubleshooting guide.
Redact wallet seeds, private keys, RPC passwords, and private user data before sharing logs or configuration. The lightwalletd project notes it is under active development and that not all recent changes have received external audit or ECC security review.
