Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Windows PC is slow or a feature is unavailable, first identify what is affected, when it began, and whether it followed an update, app installation, device change, or settings change. A sluggish whole PC calls for different checks than a Bluetooth device that will not connect or a Windows Update error. Use the steps below for Windows 10 or Windows 11, choosing the route that matches the symptom.
First, identify what is slow or unavailable
Separate a whole-PC slowdown from a problem limited to one Windows feature, app, connection, or device. Note when the issue started and write down any exact error message or code. If it began after a Windows update, record that before considering uninstalling the update or using recovery options.
- The whole PC is slow: Check storage, startup and background apps, updates, malware, and possible hardware limits.
- One feature or device fails: Use a troubleshooter for that feature, then follow its findings.
- Windows Update fails: Record the full error code and follow the Microsoft guidance for that code and Windows version.
Why is my Windows PC running slowly?
Slow performance can have more than one cause. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps or background processes, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations as possible contributors. An older PC may not improve substantially through software changes alone. Microsoft recommends trying its listed performance solutions because multiple factors can contribute to slow performance: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.
Check storage and background activity
- Free space by removing temporary files with Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup.
- Review startup apps and close unnecessary background processes.
- Install available Windows updates and relevant optional driver updates.
Scan for malware
Run a scan with Windows Security. Malware can affect performance, so check for it rather than assuming the cause is a damaged Windows installation.

Why isn’t a specific Windows feature available?
Match the built-in diagnostic to the feature that is failing instead of running unrelated troubleshooters. Microsoft’s Get Help diagnostics cover audio, Bluetooth, camera, network and internet, printers, program compatibility, video playback, Windows Media Player, and Windows Update. The diagnostics scan system configuration and provide findings or suggested remedies. Open the Microsoft Get Help troubleshooter guidance and select the item for the affected feature.
If Bluetooth will not connect
Check that the PC supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is turned on. Make sure the accessory is charged, in pairing mode, and within range. If those checks do not resolve it, try removing and adding the device again, checking Windows updates or drivers, and running the Bluetooth troubleshooter. These checks help distinguish a Windows problem from an accessory that is out of range or out of battery. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

If Wi-Fi or network access fails
For Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Before changing system-wide settings, check whether all network access is affected or only one application or website. A problem isolated to one site or app may not indicate a Windows networking fault. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
What should I try after a Windows Update error?
Use the exact error code to find the applicable Microsoft instructions for your Windows version. Update errors can arise from different causes, including connectivity, insufficient free space, driver issues, or corrupted files, so a fix for one code may not fit another. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide covers error-specific routes and points to checks such as connectivity, available space, the Windows Update troubleshooter, and system-file repair where applicable. Follow the requirements shown for your specific error rather than relying on a general free-space threshold.

When should you repair Windows system files?
Consider system-file repair when Windows features malfunction, errors appear, or the system becomes unresponsive or freezes in a way that suggests missing or corrupted files. Microsoft Support notes that “When critical Windows system files are missing or corrupted, your operating system may begin to malfunction.” Its recommended sequence is DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). Both commands require an elevated Command Prompt; search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt if asked.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Then run
sfc /scannowand allow the scan to finish.
These commands can take time. DISM ordinarily uses Windows Update as its repair source; if Windows Update is broken, a valid alternate repair source may be needed. Do not download replacement Windows system files from unofficial sites. For Microsoft’s full instructions, see Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

When should you use Windows recovery options?
Escalate only after the less disruptive, symptom-specific checks have failed. Depending on what triggered the problem, Microsoft’s recovery options may include uninstalling a recent update, returning to a previous Windows version if that option is still available, or reinstalling Windows. Some choices can cause data loss, so back up important files before proceeding. Review Microsoft’s recovery options in Windows and choose the option that fits what changed and when.
Windows installation media is a later recovery tool, not a routine fix for ordinary slowness. Microsoft describes using another working PC to download Windows and create bootable installation media on a USB flash drive. Follow the instructions to create Windows installation media only if your recovery plan calls for it.
