Start by checking whether Linux detects a wireless interface. If it does not, focus on board and kernel support, the Wi-Fi driver, and firmware—not the network password. If an interface does appear, check radio blocking, access-point visibility, authentication, and IP configuration as separate steps.

Armbian uses a Debian- or Ubuntu-based user space with board-specific kernels, bootloaders, device trees, and tuning. Wi-Fi support therefore depends on the particular board and radio chipset; there is no universal interface name or fix. Armbian’s project overview directs users to board-specific details.

Record your board, kernel, and Wi-Fi chipset

Before changing settings, identify the exact single-board computer model and revision, the Armbian image or release, the running kernel, and the Wi-Fi chipset. The radio may be onboard or attached by USB. These details determine whether the kernel has support for the device and which firmware may be needed.

Check the board’s Armbian documentation for board-dependent details. Do not assume that instructions for another board, kernel branch, or Armbian image apply to yours.

Check whether the wireless interface exists

Run these commands in a terminal:

iw dev
ip addr

iw dev lists wireless interfaces known to the kernel. Armbian also documents this command to print just their interface names:

iw dev | awk '$1=="Interface"{print $2}'

Armbian’s networking guide says a blank response from its interface check means the Wi-Fi device or dongle is not supported by the kernel. In that situation, first check board and kernel support, driver binding, and firmware; changing the SSID or password cannot create a missing interface. The separate ip addr output can help you inspect network interfaces generally. See Armbian’s networking guide.

  • OPEN SOURCE COMMITMENT: Libre Computer collaborates with software partners to create upstream infrastructure, drivers, and libraries for open-source projects such as Linux and u-boot that power our products. This enables us to support the latest software innovations created by the community and ensures that our products have the necessary security and software performance innovation for long term support.

If no wireless interface appears

  • Confirm that the board’s onboard radio or USB adapter is present and supported by the running kernel.
  • Check board-specific documentation and whether the required driver and firmware are available for this image.
  • Armbian’s image build-switch documentation describes its firmware package as including binary firmware blobs, including Wi-Fi firmware needed by many boards. Availability depends on the chipset and image; do not install a guessed package or change kernels without confirming compatibility.
  • If considering a USB adapter, verify its chipset against the target board and kernel before buying or connecting it. Armbian’s general documentation does not endorse a particular model.

Check whether the radio is blocked

If the interface exists, run:

rfkill list

Read the output for a soft block or a hard block. A software block and a physical or hardware-level block are different states. NetworkManager can manage global Wi-Fi rfkill state and update the kernel’s soft-block state, but unblocking a radio will not make an unsupported device or missing firmware appear. NetworkManager’s RFKill documentation explains its handling of Wi-Fi and WWAN radio state.

Configure Wi-Fi when an interface is present

  1. Run sudo armbian-config.
  2. Open the network settings and select the wireless interface that Linux detected.
  3. Choose the access point and enter its password.
  4. Start with DHCP unless the network requires a static address.

Armbian documents both the guided wireless setup and manual networking options. The available menus and networking details can vary by image and setup, so use the documentation matching your Armbian system rather than assuming a particular config-file path or network manager. Read about armbian-config.

If using a static address

Confirm the address and prefix, gateway, route, and DNS settings required by your network. A wireless association alone does not guarantee correct IP configuration or Internet access.

Separate access-point, authentication, and IP problems

Once the interface is detected and unblocked, diagnose the remaining connection in stages:

  • Access point not visible: Check the radio state and whether the device can see the intended network before changing credentials.
  • Authentication fails: Verify that you selected the correct access point and entered its password correctly.
  • Connection but no usable network: Check whether the device received a valid IP address and has the expected route and DNS configuration. If your network uses DHCP, verify that address assignment succeeded; if it requires static settings, verify each value.

Use ip addr to inspect interface addresses. Do not treat a successful configuration-menu operation as proof that the device has Internet access.

Choose onboard Wi-Fi or a USB adapter based on compatibility

For either option, check chipset support in the running kernel, board-specific guidance, whether an interface appears, and whether the required firmware is available. A USB adapter is a possible fallback when onboard wireless is missing or unsupported, but compatibility is not universal. Physical fit and antenna needs may also matter. The cited Armbian documentation does not establish which option is faster or more reliable, or name a best adapter.

Keep access to the board while troubleshooting

When possible, use a console or wired network connection so you can continue troubleshooting if Wi-Fi setup fails. Ethernet is not available on every board, so check your model’s documentation. Armbian’s troubleshooting guidance also directs users to board-specific details.
