If your AWS bill rises or a workload slows after an optimization, pause further rightsizing and trace the change before adjusting resources again. Fix the comparison window and cost metric, identify which service and usage type changed, correlate the delta with deployment and API events, then compare user-facing performance with its pre-change baseline. Roll back or mitigate only when the evidence and available safety mechanisms support it.
What changed, and when did the symptom begin?
Start with a short incident record. Capture the optimization’s deployment time, the first observed cost or performance change, affected accounts and Regions, and the exact resource or setting that changed. Keep the old and new configuration, deployment or instance-refresh identifier, and relevant workload indicators together. This lets you compare the billing and telemetry windows against the same event rather than chasing unrelated fluctuations.
- For cost: note the billing period and the first date usage could have changed.
- For performance: identify the affected service, endpoint or workload, plus the user-visible symptom—such as higher latency, more errors, or lower throughput.
- For scope: record whether the change was limited to one account, Region, resource, or deployment.
How do you find what caused an AWS cost spike?
Compare like with like in Cost Explorer
In AWS Cost Explorer, use the same date range and cost metric for the before-and-after comparison. Break down or filter the result by service, linked account, Region, usage type, and available cost-allocation dimensions. If Cost Anomaly Detection has identified an anomaly, inspect its ranked dimensions as another lead. The goal is to find the narrowest category that explains the delta before changing capacity again.
Then determine whether the change reflects more usage or a different effective rate. A larger quantity of compute, storage, requests, or data transfer points toward changed demand or configuration; similar usage with a different charge points toward pricing or effective-cost treatment. Amazon Q Developer cost investigation supports this usage-versus-rate distinction when relevant data is available. Cost changes can also involve both factors.

Allow billing data to catch up
Cost Explorer refreshes at least daily, and current-month data typically takes about 24 hours to appear. Cost Anomaly Detection runs after billing data is processed, approximately three times a day, and may take up to 24 hours after usage to detect an anomaly. A missing alert therefore does not establish that costs did not rise. A new anomaly monitor may need 24 hours to begin detection; for a newly subscribed service, AWS requires 10 days of historical usage before detection can work for that service.
Cost Anomaly Detection does not monitor most third-party AWS Marketplace products and services; AWS Budgets can track Marketplace charges. The anomaly service is also unavailable for bill source accounts using billing transfer.
Reconcile AWS billing views before calling it a defect
Billing displays, Cost Explorer, and Cost and Usage Reports (CUR) can differ because they serve different purposes and may use different grouping, rounding, and refresh behavior. Confirm that you are comparing the same period and cost basis. A CUR can refresh a previously closed bill when later refunds, credits, or support fees arrive. If those differences do not explain the mismatch, AWS recommends opening a support case and including the report name and billing period.

How can you connect a cost increase to an optimization?
Once you have isolated a usage-driven delta and its time window, compare it with deployment history and CloudTrail events. Look for configuration or API changes affecting the resource, note the IAM principal or role, and check whether the timing matches the optimization or a related scaling action. Correlation is evidence to investigate, not proof by itself that a particular event caused the entire charge.
There are important attribution limits. Cost Explorer aggregates billing data at the payer level, while CloudTrail event data is scoped to the account where the API call was made; cross-account investigation may require organization-wide trail coverage. CloudTrail does not attribute data operations such as S3 GetObject or DynamoDB GetItem by default. Attribution also depends on the trail configuration and whether the relevant events are still within the retention period. Amazon Q Developer cost investigation can correlate supported configuration changes with API calls and principals when the needed event data is available.
How do you tell whether performance actually regressed?
Compare the workload with its established pre-change baseline over representative periods and, where possible, comparable traffic. AWS Well-Architected guidance says that establishing a baseline for workload metrics aids in understanding workload health and performance. Use signals that reflect the service’s behavior, not just the utilization of one resource.

- User impact: latency, errors or faults, and throughput or request volume.
- Capacity: available or in-service capacity, queue depth where relevant, and scaling behavior.
- Resource signals: CPU, memory, disk, and network metrics relevant to the workload and change.
A low CPU reading alone does not show that downsizing is safe; the workload may be constrained by memory, disk, network, bursts, or a peak period not represented in the comparison. A high CPU reading alone does not prove it caused the regression. Look for timing and behavior that connect resource pressure to the latency, errors, or throughput change.
AWS AppConfig monitoring examples include API Gateway 4XX and 5XX errors and latency (including IntegrationLatency), Auto Scaling group in-service capacity, and EC2 CPUUtilization. For deeper investigation, CloudWatch service operations can correlate metrics, traces, and application logs.

Check what your EC2 metrics can and cannot show
EC2’s default CloudWatch metric data points are five-minute intervals; detailed monitoring provides one-minute points. Those metrics are not a complete host diagnostic. For memory-aware rightsizing recommendations, the CloudWatch agent must collect the prescribed memory metric, and the rightsizing workflow currently does not examine disk utilization. If memory or disk matters to the symptom, verify that you have suitable telemetry rather than treating an absent metric as evidence of spare capacity.

How much confidence should you place in an optimization recommendation?
Treat a recommendation as a hypothesis to test against your workload’s real constraints. AWS Compute Optimizer requires at least 30 hours of EC2 or Auto Scaling CloudWatch metric data within the previous 14 days for the cited resources, and analysis can take up to 24 hours. Meeting a minimum collection requirement does not mean the data captures every seasonal peak, deployment pattern, or unusual traffic burst.
Before applying a follow-up rightsizing or configuration change, check that the metrics cover the workload’s relevant CPU, memory, and network behavior, and test the configuration outside production. AWS guidance specifically recommends considering workload characteristics and testing changes outside production. Preserve a usable baseline and roll out gradually where the deployment mechanism supports it.

- AWS AppConfig: during a deployment, AppConfig can revert a configuration when associated CloudWatch alarms enter
ALARMorINSUFFICIENT_DATA. This depends on having the alarm monitoring and rollback configuration in place. - EC2 Auto Scaling instance refresh: an in-progress refresh can automatically roll back on failure or configured alarm states if automatic rollback is enabled.
A completed instance refresh cannot be rolled back as the same operation. If the old configuration is still the desired safe state, use another refresh to update the group. For either kind of remediation, verify the resulting configuration and observe workload health after the change rather than assuming the rollback alone resolved the incident.
Which remediation is safest?
Choose a response that addresses the demonstrated cause while preserving service safety. Compare candidate actions on these dimensions before rollout:
- Cost: does the action reduce excess usage, correct an effective-rate issue, or address neither?
- Service behavior: what happens to latency, errors, and throughput under representative load?
- Safety margin: does the workload retain headroom and scale appropriately during peaks?
- Blast radius and reversibility: how many resources or accounts are affected, and how quickly can the change be undone?
- Evidence quality: do the billing dimensions, event history, and monitoring coverage support the diagnosis?
Set alarms appropriate to the workload and use them during a gradual rollout. There is no universal CPU or latency threshold that is safe for every workload; thresholds need to reflect the service’s baseline and user impact.
