If one website shows an SSL or secure-connection warning, compare the same hostname in another browser, then check whether the problem follows your browser, device, network, or the website. Record the full error before changing settings, verify your device’s date and time, and do not enter passwords or payment details while the warning is present.
First, record the warning and where it occurs
Different browsers can describe related certificate or secure-connection failures in different words. You might see “Your connection is not private,” “Secure Connection Failed,” or Safari’s “can’t open the page because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server.” Preserve the exact wording and any code, such as ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID, or ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. - Write down the hostname and URL, browser, device, operating system if known, exact message or code, and when it happened.
- Note whether the page fails before loading, after a redirect, or only after you follow a link.
- Do not submit credentials or payment information while a certificate warning is displayed.
Compare the same website across browsers
Open the same hostname—not just another page or a search result—in a second browser on the same device. This is a clue about scope, not a definitive diagnosis: multiple causes can coexist, and a website or network configuration can change. Mozilla recommends testing another browser when investigating loading failures. [Mozilla Support]

Check the device clock before changing security settings
Confirm the date, time, and time zone on the affected device, correct them if needed, and retry the site. An inaccurate clock can make a certificate appear not yet valid or expired. If the clock is correct, the certificate may actually be expired or misconfigured; the browser warning alone does not establish which. [Google Chrome Help; Mozilla Support]

Test browser-specific causes safely
If the site works in a browser’s private window but not its regular window, an extension or profile configuration may be involved. Chrome Help recommends testing Incognito and checking extensions. Disable or adjust extensions selectively to identify a possible cause; private mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to dismiss a warning in the regular window. If only one browser fails, review that browser’s proxy and DNS-over-HTTPS settings as well as its extensions. Avoid making broad changes to device-wide certificate or security settings based on a single error; first establish whether the issue is limited to that browser. [Mozilla Support]

Check the network, VPN, proxy, and security software
A Wi-Fi network may require a captive-portal sign-in before normal browsing works. Complete the sign-in through the network’s legitimate login page, then retry the exact hostname. If appropriate, compare using a trusted alternate network; do not use an unfamiliar public network for sensitive activity merely to test the connection.
VPNs, proxies, DNS services, firewalls, antivirus HTTPS scanning, and corporate TLS inspection can affect secure connections. If the warning appears only on a particular network or managed device, ask the network or IT administrator to check its configuration. Do not bypass certificate or HSTS warnings
HSTS tells the browser to require a secure connection. A certificate-authority warning or an HSTS-related error can reflect a broken certificate chain, interception, or another trust problem. Do not switch to HTTP, ignore the warning, or install a certificate from an unknown source. Google Chrome Help cautions: “It isn’t recommended that you install a certificate on your own, as it’s usually a security risk.” [Google Chrome Help; Mozilla Support; Cloudflare]

Contact the website owner if the clock is correct, browser and shared-device checks do not explain the warning, or the same hostname fails across browsers and networks. A repeated failure raises the value of escalation, but does not by itself prove the site is responsible.

Include the hostname, exact error text and code, time observed, browser and operating-system versions, and whether another browser, device, or network reproduces it. The site operator can investigate certificate validity and hostname coverage, TLS configuration, and certificate activation.
