To troubleshoot slow Spectrum internet, check for a local outage first, then compare the connection on one device versus several and test WiFi against Ethernet. Those checks help distinguish a service or equipment problem from weak WiFi or a device-specific slowdown—before you spend money on new hardware.

Why is my Spectrum internet so slow?

Slow performance can come from an outage, the shared connection or equipment, your WiFi signal, or one device. Spectrum identifies router placement, concurrent users, device hardware and software, and background applications as factors that can affect performance. A slow WiFi test by itself does not show that Spectrum’s service is slow.

Follow these checks in order. Spectrum recommends checking for an outage before troubleshooting equipment. Check Spectrum’s outage support or use the My Spectrum app or account; outage availability is address-dependent. A new router, cable, or WiFi Pod will not fix a provider-side outage.

How do I tell whether the problem is WiFi or the internet connection?

Compare affected devices, then compare WiFi with a wired test. Spectrum Community recommends testing with a computer connected to the modem using a Cat 5e or higher Ethernet cable. Check that the computer and modem have compatible ports before choosing a cable. The cable is for diagnosis, not a guaranteed speed fix.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What you find What to check next
Only one device is slow Check that device’s software, hardware, background activity, and connection; restart the device.
Several devices are slow, but Ethernet performs better Focus on WiFi coverage, router placement, and local wireless conditions.
Several devices are slow over both WiFi and Ethernet Check outage status, connections, and equipment; if wired performance remains poor, contact Spectrum.

These patterns help narrow the cause but are not proof of it. The number of people using the connection and the capabilities or software of devices can also affect results.

Check device activity and physical connections

  • Close unnecessary apps or programs that may be using the connection in the background.
  • Check for device, browser, and operating-system updates, and restart a device that is unusually slow.
  • Inspect coax connections and look for damaged cables or splitters. Make sure connections are secure.
  • File sharing, malware or adware, firewall settings, and limited device memory are other possible contributors; none can be diagnosed from a slow speed result alone.

Spectrum Community’s verified employee moderator James_M listed suggested bandwidth ranges in a post first dated February 2021 and edited in November 2021. The figures are historical guidance, not current guarantees for a particular app, service tier, or household:

Restart Spectrum equipment using the appropriate instructions

Spectrum’s outage troubleshooting instructions describe this sequence for a separate modem and router. Equipment guidance can differ, so follow the directions for your specific model. A modem/router gateway does not have a separate router to restart.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  1. Unplug the modem and, if separate, the router.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect power to the modem.
  3. Allow about two minutes for the modem to reconnect before powering the separate router back on.
  4. Wait for the router to reconnect, then check the connection again.

Spectrum’s general equipment page separately gives a reboot instruction to wait at least 60 seconds. Use the procedure specified for your equipment rather than combining timings from different instructions. Spectrum says not to manually troubleshoot fiber equipment; follow the instructions for that equipment or contact Spectrum support.

How do I fix slow Spectrum WiFi?

If Ethernet works better than WiFi, try improving the router’s position before considering coverage hardware. Spectrum’s WiFi 6E Router User Guide, version 12 (copyright 2023), recommends a central location, a raised surface, and an open space for coverage. The guide also notes that signal weakens with distance.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Place the router centrally, raised and in the open rather than in a closet or media center.
  • Avoid placing it behind a TV or near devices that emit radio signals.
  • Move closer to the router and compare performance to see whether distance appears to matter.

If poor WiFi is limited to a particular area, check whether Spectrum WiFi Pods are compatible with your setup before considering one. The WiFi 6E guide describes adding or removing up to five Pods per router, but that does not establish compatibility with every Spectrum router or setup. A factory reset is not the same as a restart: Spectrum’s WiFi 6E guide says holding the reset button for more than 15 seconds performs a factory reset and removes personalized configuration. Do not use it as a routine speed fix.

When should I contact Spectrum?

Contact Spectrum if multiple devices remain slow on a wired connection after you have checked for an outage, inspected connections, and restarted supported equipment according to its instructions. Share details that help support assess the issue:
