Start with a reload and update, then compare the affected site with extensions off, a private window, another browser, and—if needed—another network. Make one reversible change at a time so you can identify what actually fixes the problem.
Start with the simplest checks
- Reload the page: Press Command-R on Mac. On iPhone or iPad, use Safari’s reload control.
- Quit and reopen Safari: If reloading does not help, close Safari and open it again.
- Update and restart: Install available macOS updates and restart your Mac. Safari is included with macOS, so Safari updates arrive through macOS updates. On iPhone or iPad, install available iOS or iPadOS updates. See Apple’s Safari troubleshooting steps.
Note the scope before changing anything: is the issue limited to one website, all websites in Safari, or other browsers and devices too? That distinction helps identify whether the cause is site data, an extension, Safari settings, or the network.
Check whether an extension is interfering
Temporarily turn off extensions on Mac
- Open Safari > Settings > Extensions. On older macOS versions, the menu may say Preferences.
- Deselect the extensions to turn them off temporarily.
- Reload the affected site. If it now works, turn extensions back on one at a time to identify the one associated with the problem, then update that extension.
Safari profiles can have separate extension settings, so check the profile you are using. A newly created profile has extensions off by default. In macOS Sonoma 14 or later, extensions that require website access are off by default in private windows unless you allow them for private browsing. Apple documents these settings in its Safari extension guidance.
Manage extensions on iPhone
Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions. If you use Safari profiles, enable the extension for each profile where you need it. To control an extension on the current site, open Safari’s Page Menu and tap Manage Extensions. To remove an iPhone extension, delete the app that contains it. Check what each installed extension does and review the access it requests.

If the extension switch is unavailable on Mac
Apple says legitimate software with screen-recording or accessibility features can sometimes interfere with the security feature that prevents malicious software from enabling Safari extensions. Install available Apple software updates and try again. If the checkbox is still blocked, start your Mac in Safe Mode, open Safari, and try enabling the extension there; then restart normally. Follow Apple’s extension troubleshooting guidance.
For new extensions, Apple identifies the Mac App Store as the safest and easiest place to find them; extensions there are reviewed by Apple and can update automatically when Automatic Updates is selected. Extensions may access webpages, so review their permissions and limit access to selected sites when possible. Legacy developer-signed .safariextz extensions no longer load in current Safari guidance.

Test whether stored data for one site is the problem
Open the affected page in a New Private Window on Mac with Shift-Command-N. If it works there but not in your regular window, stored data for that website may be contributing to the issue.
- First, make sure you know your sign-in details; removing site data may sign you out.
- In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- Select the affected website and choose Remove, then reload the page.
Remove data for the specific site rather than clearing everything. A private-window test is a clue, not proof: extensions or other differences between browsing contexts can also affect the result. Apple describes site-data troubleshooting in its Safari support article.

Review only the settings relevant to the site
Some websites depend on browser features or permissions that Safari lets you restrict. Apple lists JavaScript, cookies, cross-site tracking, camera or microphone access, downloads, pop-ups, content blockers, and advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection among settings that may affect a page. Check the site’s specific controls and permissions rather than changing every privacy setting.
- If the site needs a feature such as JavaScript, verify whether it is allowed.
- If a sign-in or embedded content flow fails, check whether the site depends on cookies or cross-site tracking.
- If a page function needs the camera, microphone, downloads, or pop-ups, check that site’s permission for the relevant action.
- If a content blocker appears to affect the page, test that site’s blocker setting temporarily.
Reducing privacy protections can expose more activity or weaken protections. Change only the setting that plausibly relates to the failure, test the site, and restore the original setting if it does not help. Apple’s troubleshooting guide describes these examples.

Separate Safari problems from network or website problems
- Check Private Relay: Reload the page and, if the option appears, choose Reload and Show IP Address. If the site then works, Private Relay may be involved.
- Review network tools: Consider whether a VPN, security or network-monitoring app, custom proxy, or custom DNS setting could affect the connection.
- Compare browsers and devices: Try the same page in another browser or on another device using the same network.
- Compare networks: If possible, try a different Wi-Fi or cellular network.
If the same site fails in other browsers and on other devices on the same network, Apple says the issue is probably with the website. For persistent site-specific failures, contact the website owner or developer. Apple says Safari 26 adds Report a Website Issue after reloading on devices covered by the latest updates for macOS Sequoia 15 or later; the option is not guaranteed to appear on every device. If links open in unexpected tabs or windows, or tabs close without you intending it, check Safari’s tab preferences. This is a tab-configuration issue, not necessarily a website compatibility problem.

- On Mac, open Safari > Settings > Tabs.
- Review the controls for whether pages open in tabs or windows and how tabs are displayed.
- Check whether automatic tab closure is set to After one day, After one week, or After one month. Choose Manually if you do not want Safari to close tabs automatically.

- Only one site fails: Test a private window, then remove only that site’s stored data if the private-window result points that way. Check site-specific permissions and contact the site owner if the failure persists.
- The site works with extensions off: Re-enable extensions one at a time and update the extension associated with the change.
- Safari fails, but another browser works on the same device and network: Focus on Safari’s extensions, site data, and relevant browser settings.
- The site fails in several browsers or devices on one network: Try another network; if the issue remains limited to the site, contact its owner or developer.
- Tabs open or close unexpectedly: Check Safari’s Tabs settings rather than changing website permissions.
