If ReSkate will not launch or connect on Steam Deck, first identify whether the failure is in the launcher, the game build, SteamOS/Proton, general internet access, or a particular multiplayer action. Update and restart the Deck, confirm ReSkate is using the game build its launcher supports, then test general connectivity. If joining works but hosting shows “Multiplayer is off,” a Linux/Proton hosting issue has been reported—but that report describes one setup, not every Steam Deck.
Identify what is failing before changing settings
Separate a launch problem from a connection problem. Note whether the ReSkate launcher will not open, the game fails after you press PLAY, Steam itself cannot connect, or only ReSkate multiplayer actions fail. For multiplayer, check whether you can join a lobby even if you cannot host one.
For a useful support report, record your Steam Deck LCD or OLED model, SteamOS version, selected Proton version, ReSkate version, game build, exact error text, and whether joining works when hosting does not. These details help distinguish device or network trouble from a game-build or Proton-specific problem.
Try Steam Deck’s general software checks
- Install available SteamOS updates. Open Settings and check for system updates, install any available update, and restart the Deck before testing again. Valve recommends updating and restarting as initial steps for software instability. See Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Retest without third-party Desktop Mode applications. Exit or disable applications you installed through Desktop Mode, then try ReSkate again. Valve lists this as a way to check whether third-party software is interfering.
- Check compatibility and Proton options where applicable. For a Steam app, open its Properties and review the Compatibility section; if appropriate, try the latest Proton compatibility tool available there. Menu wording can change, and a Proton change is a diagnostic test—not a guaranteed ReSkate fix.
Valve’s compatibility labels mean different things: Verified works well out of the box, Playable may need user adjustments, Unsupported is currently not functional on Deck, and Unknown means it has not been checked. The rating evaluates input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware. Do not assume ReSkate has a particular Deck rating; verify its current Steam listing if one is available. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility overview.

Check ReSkate’s installation and supported game build
ReSkate is a fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts or Full Circle, and its README says you need your own Steam copy of skate. Follow the official ReSkate README and use the current official release rather than assuming an older installation is still supported.
The README’s documented Windows-style setup places ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll beside Skate.exe, or in an empty folder where the launcher can install the game. Start the launcher and press PLAY. It checks for ReSkate updates and checks game files against its supported build. If the game is missing or Steam has advanced it beyond that build, the launcher may ask you to sign in to Steam and download the needed files.

The README currently names Steam build 25414733. This value can change: check the README or release notes for the current supported build before troubleshooting a mismatch. A game-build mismatch is different from poor Wi-Fi or a Steam Deck hardware fault.
The README lists the session log as logs/ReSkate.log beside Skate.exe. Preserve relevant log details for a support report. That documented path does not establish the exact location as viewed from SteamOS/Proton, so do not assume a Linux path based on it. The project also says launcher or game crashes upload a minidump and session log to its Backtrace account; crash reporting can be disabled in launcher Settings (ADVANCED) or by setting RESKATE_CRASH_REPORTING=0.

Test general internet and Wi-Fi separately
If Steam or other online services also have trouble, isolate the connection before treating the problem as a ReSkate defect. Steam Support recommends checking Steam server status, trying another available Wi-Fi frequency, and considering local interference affecting Wi-Fi or powerline connections. An internet speed test can also help you assess the local link.
- Try another Wi-Fi band: If your router offers more than one frequency band, connect to a different one and retest.
- Check Steam service availability: A temporary Steam service issue can resemble a local connection problem.
- Isolate wireless: A direct wired connection can help determine whether the Wi-Fi link is involved. A Steam Deck requires additional USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware for this test.
These checks diagnose general connectivity; they are not established fixes for a ReSkate build problem or Proton multiplayer limitation. In particular, a wired adapter is not known to fix lobby hosting.

If “Multiplayer is off” appears only when hosting
An issue opened in the ReSkate project tracker on October 4, 2026, titled “Cannot host lobby on Linux/Proton – ‘Multiplayer is off’ persists,” describes a specific Linux/Proton setup. The issue author reported Linux Mint, native Linux Steam, Proton Experimental, and ReSkate launched as a non-Steam game through Proton, using ReSkate versions 1.0.6 and 1.0.7. According to the report, joining lobbies worked but hosting did not; the author attributed the failure to Steam P2P listen-socket creation failing on Proton and reported no workaround at that time. This is an individual open issue report, not a confirmed project-wide diagnosis or evidence that every Steam Deck configuration is affected. If your symptom matches—joining works but Host lobby shows “Multiplayer is off”—endless router changes or a USB-C Ethernet test are unlikely to address the reported hosting limitation. Share your ReSkate version, game build, Proton and SteamOS details, exact message, and relevant log information through the project’s official support channels. The reviewed report did not establish a confirmed workaround.
