Check the paper and tray setup, remove accessible jammed sheets gently, then follow the manufacturer’s steps for any optional feeder or finishing accessory. The locations and removal procedures vary by printer, so do not assume one model’s instructions apply to another.
Start with the jam message and the printer model
Read the complete error message or jam code on the printer’s display, then match it to the instructions for the exact make and model. A message may identify a particular input tray, duplexing path, document feeder, or finishing device. For example, HP’s Color LaserJet CM6030/CM6040 instructions distinguish optional trays, finishing devices, and the automatic document feeder (ADF); Canon’s imageRUNNER guide provides separate procedures for an optional feeder, finisher, and inner tray. Those procedures are specific to the named equipment, not universal directions. See HP’s instructions for the Color LaserJet CM6030/CM6040 and Canon’s imageRUNNER guide.
Check the tray and paper before removing accessories
For the location named by the printer, check the paper setup and look for an accessible obstruction. On the cited HP Color LaserJet families, the documented checks include removing damaged sheets, confirming the tray is not overfilled, aligning its paper guides with the stack, and looking for paper around the feed rollers. Use your printer’s instructions for how to access its rollers or tray; do not reach into a mechanism that the manual does not identify as user-accessible. HP’s model-specific tray-jam guidance describes these checks.
- Remove sheets that are visibly torn, folded, or otherwise damaged.
- Check that the stack is within the tray’s capacity and that the guides fit the paper without pinching it.
- Look for paper or debris around the feed area only where the model’s instructions permit access.
Clear a jam in a duplexer, optional tray, or finisher
Follow the exact removal sequence for the named accessory. A duplexer or finisher can have more than one access point, and removing it incorrectly can damage the device or leave paper behind. HP’s instructions for one listed LaserJet duplexer call for removing the duplexer, inspecting above Tray 2, slowly removing paper from the duplexer, reinstalling it, and checking other locations if the error remains. Another HP optional-tray guide advises gentle removal and moving to a different step if the paper does not move. These are examples for those specific models, not a shared procedure for every printer. See the cited LaserJet duplexer procedure and the optional-tray jam guidance.

Do not use sharp tools or force a stuck sheet
Do not probe a paper path with tweezers, needle-nose pliers, or another sharp object. HP explicitly warns users of the OfficeJet Pro 9130: “Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams.” Follow the safety directions for your own model, and stop if the paper cannot be removed through the documented user-accessible steps. Read HP’s OfficeJet Pro 9130 jam guidance.
If the warning remains, look for paper elsewhere in the documented path
A persistent jam warning does not necessarily mean the first location you checked is still blocked. Depending on the model, a torn fragment or debris elsewhere in the path may obstruct a sensor. After checking the first location, inspect other areas named in the manufacturer’s instructions, such as the duplexing path or another tray. Do not remove covers or disassemble the printer beyond the procedures documented for users. HP describes torn paper or debris blocking a sensor as a possible cause on certain models. See the model-specific troubleshooting guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider roller cleaning or replacement only when the model’s instructions call for it
Feed rollers can accumulate debris or wear, but cleaning and replacement are model-specific. HP’s Officejet Pro 8500A instructions describe checking duplexer rollers for debris and free rotation and, when appropriate, cleaning them with a clean, lint-free cloth. Do not treat that as a universal cleaning method: consult your model’s instructions before touching rollers or applying any cleaning method. See the Officejet Pro 8500A roller guidance.
