Start with the exact server’s support matrix, firmware requirements, and qualified-memory list; then inspect what the operating system sees and test workload-specific tuning against a repeatable baseline. EPYC compatibility and performance depend on the processor generation, server or motherboard, firmware, operating system, memory layout, and workload—so there is no single BIOS or NUMA setting that is right for every system.

1. Record the system and define the symptom

Before changing settings, make an inventory detailed enough to match the system to its vendor’s compatibility information and the correct AMD tuning guide. Record:

  • EPYC model and generation, server or motherboard model, and number of sockets.
  • BIOS and BMC revisions, plus the operating system and kernel version or Windows Server release.
  • Memory part numbers, capacities, and slot population; include PCIe devices relevant to the workload.
  • The specific symptom: failure to boot or recognize the processor, an incompatible device, low throughput, high latency, or inconsistent results between runs.
  • The workload, its settings, and baseline measurements, including how each run was performed.

This information matters because AMD directs users to their platform manufacturer for compatibility and troubleshooting, and tuning resources are organized by EPYC family and operating system. A setting described for one generation may not exist or apply on another.

2. Rule out platform and component incompatibility

Check processor support and firmware

Look up the exact processor on the server or motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support page. Check the vendor’s instructions for the minimum BIOS and BMC versions required to recognize it. AMD notes that a new processor may need a BIOS or platform BMC update; do not assume a failure to boot means the CPU itself is defective.

Check memory against the exact platform

Compare the installed DIMMs with the server or motherboard’s qualified, tested, or approved memory list, and follow its population rules. AMD notes that platform manufacturers publish tested and approved memory lists. Memory that is generally described as server memory or EPYC-compatible is not, by that description alone, confirmed for a particular system. Use memory supported by the exact platform; do not select a replacement DIMM without checking its qualification data.

Check power and the vendor’s diagnostic sequence

Confirm that power connections and supply capacity meet the platform requirements, then follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic steps. AMD identifies unsupported memory and system power as possible causes to consider when investigating a suspected processor fault. If the support list, firmware, memory, or power requirements are not met, resolve those checks before attempting performance tuning.

3. Inspect CPU, memory, and device topology

See what the operating system detects

On Linux, lscpu provides a quick CPU and socket inventory. lstopo from hwloc can show a fuller topology view. Use the operating system’s NUMA tools, such as numactl, to inspect available NUMA nodes and affinity. Compare the observed layout with the installed processors, memory, and devices rather than assuming the intended hardware layout is what the OS is using.

Relate placement to the workload

Check which CPUs run the work, which NUMA nodes hold its memory, and where relevant PCIe devices are attached. AMD’s low-latency application note recommends understanding sockets, NUMA nodes, CPU and memory arrangement, and cache topology, and discusses keeping time-critical work near local memory where appropriate. That note is revision 3.01 from June 2018, so treat it as background for locality—not as current, universal firmware instructions.

Investigate first-touch allocation and migration

On Linux, memory is often allocated on a first-touch basis: the NUMA node associated with the thread that first initializes a memory region can affect where that memory is placed. If one NUMA region initializes data later used across several regions, remote accesses can increase latency and reduce aggregate bandwidth. AMD’s AOCL tuning guide discusses thread migration, pinning, OpenMP configuration, and NUMA memory placement as factors that can change application performance. Thread binding or memory policy may help a particular workload, but schedulers may already manage placement; inspect the actual behavior before imposing affinity.

4. Tune only against a repeatable baseline

Change one relevant variable at a time

Keep the workload, input, software settings, and measurement method consistent. Record the baseline, make one change related to the measured symptom, and rerun the same workload. Candidate variables include the BIOS performance or power profile, NPS/NUMA settings, memory interleaving, CPU affinity, thread count, and OS scheduler or NUMA behavior. Changing several at once makes it difficult to identify what caused a result.

Compare the trade-offs that matter

Measure the outcome the workload needs—such as latency, throughput, or memory bandwidth—alongside CPU and memory locality, run-to-run consistency, and power behavior. A configuration that improves one measure may worsen another. AMD’s EPYC 9005 tuning guide, document 58467 revision 2.3 released 2026-09-24, describes NPS as a trade-off between minimizing local-memory latency and maximizing per-core memory bandwidth; applicability depends on processor configuration and workload. Use the guide for the matching generation and validate its recommendations on the target system rather than treating one NPS choice as best for all servers.

Keep security and reliability requirements in view

Do not reflexively disable power management, security, virtualization, or error-monitoring features to chase performance. AMD’s 2018 low-latency note discusses trade-offs for a specific latency objective, including possible firmware and system-management-interrupt effects. Its age and narrow purpose make it unsuitable as a blanket prescription; check current platform guidance and the system’s security and reliability requirements before changing such features.

5. Escalate with reproducible evidence

If the system still fails the platform’s compatibility checks or produces repeatable errors, give the server or motherboard vendor the system inventory, firmware revisions, memory configuration, relevant logs, and a reproducible description of the failure or benchmark. AMD recommends testing the processor in another compatible system where possible before concluding that the CPU is defective. For model-specific instructions, use the platform vendor’s support information and the AMD tuning guide for the correct EPYC family and operating system.
