If Linux cannot use a device, first find out where the failure occurs: is the hardware visible to the computer, enumerated by Linux, bound to a driver, supplied with required firmware, and working in the application or feature you need? Each stage points to a different remedy. Installing another driver is unlikely to help if the device is not visible on its bus, while a device that appears without a driver calls for checking support, module availability, firmware, and security policy.

Before changing anything, note your distribution and release, kernel version, exact device model or PCI/USB ID, connection or slot, and when the problem began. Keep a known-good boot or recovery route available before changing kernel modules or boot settings.

How to check whether Linux detects your hardware

Use the inventory tool for the device’s connection type. These commands inspect hardware; they do not install drivers.

  • lspci -nnk — PCI devices, including many internal network adapters, graphics cards, and controllers. The output can show the device ID and a kernel driver in use.
  • lsusb — USB devices. If a USB device does not appear, try another port and check whether it has power.
  • lshw — a broader hardware inventory tool, if it is available on your distribution. Ubuntu’s hardware-detection guidance lists lshw, lspci, and lsusb as inventory tools: Ubuntu hardware detection.

For PCI devices, the kernel’s documentation explains device identification and discovery: Linux kernel PCI documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the device is not listed

Linux cannot bind a driver to hardware it does not see on its bus. Check the connection, power, port or slot, firmware or BIOS settings, disabled radios, and—where practical—the device’s condition or compatibility with the platform. The relevant checks depend on the device: a missing USB peripheral and an absent internal PCI card do not have identical causes. Installing a driver should not be the first step.

If it is listed with a driver in use

The kernel has attached a driver, so the problem may be later in the chain: initialization, firmware, permissions, configuration, or the application or system feature that uses the device. Continue with kernel messages and the relevant subsystem’s troubleshooting tools.

If it is listed but no driver is in use

Check whether the running kernel supports the exact device ID and hardware revision, whether the needed module is available, and whether a configuration or blacklist prevents loading it. Also check kernel messages for missing firmware or a module rejected by Secure Boot.

How to inspect Linux kernel messages

Reproduce the problem, then review kernel messages around that time. Use journalctl -k where available, or dmesg if your system permits access. Some systems restrict access to the kernel ring buffer, so elevated privileges may be necessary. Ubuntu describes dmesg as a view into kernel activity involving software and hardware and documents access restrictions in its kernel log buffer guidance.

Search for the device’s model or ID and note messages about probe failures, missing firmware, signature rejection, resource conflicts, or resets. Keep timestamps and surrounding lines with the kernel version; a single error without context may be misleading. Review logs for sensitive details before sharing them publicly.

What to do when Linux reports missing firmware

Firmware and a driver are different things. A driver is kernel software that manages a device; some devices also need firmware loaded for their operation. The kernel has dedicated firmware documentation, but the package name and installation method depend on the hardware and distribution.

If a kernel message names a missing firmware file, use that exact filename to find the package and instructions for your distribution release or the device maintainer. Avoid firmware files from untrusted sites and packages intended for another release. Do not assume that installing a different driver will supply the firmware your device needs.

Why a Linux driver may not load with Secure Boot enabled

Secure Boot can reject unsigned kernel modules. Ubuntu documents module signature enforcement and a process for signing third-party modules and enrolling a Machine Owner Key (MOK). If you use Ubuntu, follow the current instructions for your release in its Secure Boot documentation. Other distributions may use different procedures and policies.

Do not treat disabling Secure Boot as the default fix: it changes a security control and may conceal the actual signing problem. First confirm that Secure Boot is relevant to the module that failed, then use the supported signing or driver route for your distribution.

Which Linux driver source should you use?

Prefer the driver route supported for your distribution and release. A driver that supports the device in general may still conflict with your kernel, package manager, or Secure Boot configuration. Compare options using the criteria that affect your system:

  • Does the driver support the exact device ID and hardware revision?
  • Is it compatible with your distribution release and running kernel?
  • Is it an in-kernel driver, a distribution package, or a vendor-provided module—and who maintains updates?
  • Will it work with your Secure Boot policy?
  • Can you reverse the change, and how will future updates arrive?
  • Does it provide the particular capability you need?

Ubuntu example: NVIDIA graphics drivers

For NVIDIA GPUs on Ubuntu, Canonical recommends selecting a driver through ubuntu-drivers or the Additional Drivers application. The tools use the same selection logic and default to prebuilt signed drivers. Canonical warns that installation methods outside its documented route can overwrite Ubuntu-provided packages or cause Secure Boot problems. Check the current Ubuntu NVIDIA driver instructions rather than relying on a hard-coded driver branch or applying this Ubuntu-specific advice to another distribution or vendor.

How to test a driver or configuration change safely

  1. Save the original inventory output, relevant kernel messages, distribution and release, kernel version, and device ID.
  2. Make one change at a time, using the distribution’s supported package or configuration method. This makes it easier to identify which change affected the result.
  3. Reboot if the driver, firmware, or change requires it, then repeat the same inventory checks and inspect messages from the new boot.
  4. Test the original function—for example, whether the adapter connects or the device performs the task that failed. A driver appearing in inventory does not by itself prove that the feature works.
  5. If the change makes things worse, use the package manager or a configuration backup to revert it, then return to the known-good boot or recovery route if needed.

What to include in a Linux hardware support request

A useful report lets someone distinguish missing hardware from a driver or firmware failure. Include your distribution and release, kernel version, exact device model or bus ID, connection or slot, when the fault began, and what changed shortly beforehand. Add relevant inventory output and kernel messages from the time of the failure, with sensitive details reviewed or removed.
