A message such as “Can’t contact LDAP server” usually points first to the target or connection path; a bind result means the client reached the LDAP service and should be investigated as an authentication or policy issue. The exact cause depends on the client and directory server, so use the full error and its diagnostic details rather than treating every failure alike.
Start by identifying which stage failed
LDAP troubleshooting is easier when you distinguish four stages: reaching the intended server, establishing any required TLS session, sending a bind, and receiving the server’s bind result. A successful TCP connection does not mean authentication succeeded. A bind establishes the client’s authentication state, after which the server applies access privileges. Microsoft describes this distinction in its Active Directory binding documentation.
- No connection or session: Check the URI, DNS, port, listener, routing, firewall, and TLS handshake.
- TLS or StartTLS error: Check the configured mode, operation order, certificate identity, trust chain, and TLS logs.
- Bind rejected: Check the bind identity, credentials, authentication mechanism, and server policy. Use the server’s result code and diagnostic message to narrow the cause.
Record the exact client error, LDAP result code and diagnostic text, client library and version, configured URI and port, and matching directory-server events. These details help distinguish a transport failure from a bind failure; the same headline can arise at different stages.
Check the URI, hostname, port, and listener
- Read the configured LDAP URI exactly. Confirm the hostname and port are the intended ones, and whether the client is set to use
ldaps://orldap://with StartTLS. - Check name resolution and network path. Verify the hostname resolves as expected from the client and that routing and firewall rules permit access to the target.
- Confirm the service is listening at that endpoint. A host responding to ping only demonstrates ICMP reachability; it does not show that LDAP is listening or reachable on the required port.
- Test the actual target. For OpenLDAP command-line tools, the
-Hoption supplies the LDAP URI. OpenLDAP’s common-errors guide lists a stopped server and an invalid client URI or interface among possible causes of “Can’t contact LDAP server.”
Distinguish connection failures from bind failures
If the client cannot establish a socket or session, concentrate on the endpoint, listener, network path, and TLS handshake. If the client receives a bind result from the server, the connection reached the LDAP service; investigate the bind DN or identity format, credentials, authentication mechanism, and directory policy. A successful bind sets the authentication state and determines access according to the client’s privileges, as described in Microsoft’s binding guidance.

Do not infer a single universal cause from a bind error. Capture the exact result and diagnostic message, then compare it with the directory server’s logs and configuration. Check signing, channel-binding, or other policy only when those details point to it.
Choose the right TLS mode and sequence

The appropriate URI and port depend on the deployment; verify the configured values for the client and server rather than assuming a product-specific default. The protocol behavior is defined in RFC 4511 and RFC 4513.

StartTLS is an LDAP operation, not an extra label for an already encrypted connection. RFC 4511 says that a server that does not support StartTLS returns protocolError, and protocol-sequencing violations can return operationsError. OpenLDAP documents “ldap_start_tls: Operations error” when TLS has already started, for example when an ldaps:// connection is combined with a separate StartTLS request. Do not enable both modes for one connection.
RFC 4513 recommends performing StartTLS before Bind when both are needed, so credentials and bind messages are sent under the resulting TLS layer. Preserve certificate and hostname validation; disabling trust checks is not a routine fix.

Validate LDAPS certificates
For Microsoft Active Directory LDAPS
Microsoft’s LDAPS connection guidance says the domain controller certificate should identify its fully qualified domain name in the subject CN or DNS subjectAltName, include the Server Authentication enhanced key usage, have an available private key, and chain to a CA trusted by the client.
- Use
certutil -verifykeysto verify private-key access. - Use
certutil -v -urlfetch -verifyto validate the certificate chain. - Check for multiple qualifying certificates in the Local Computer store; Schannel may select the first valid certificate it finds.
- Test locally with Ldp.exe on port 636, then review its errors and Event Viewer. Enable Schannel event logging if additional TLS detail is needed.
For OpenLDAP
The OpenLDAP 2.6 TLS guide says the server certificate should identify the fully qualified server name in its CN; aliases or wildcards may be represented in subjectAltName. Apply the certificate requirements and trust-store checks for the actual server and client implementation rather than assuming Active Directory settings are universal.

Use error text as a clue, not a complete diagnosis
- “Can’t contact LDAP server”: OpenLDAP’s common-errors appendix treats this as a contact failure and names a stopped server or incorrect client target as possible causes. Check the URI, resolution, port, listener, and network path first.
ldap_start_tls: Operations error: OpenLDAP documents this when TLS has already started. Check for anldaps://URI combined with another StartTLS request and verify the operation sequence.- Local SASL interactive bind error 82: OpenLDAP notes that missing forward and reverse DNS entries can contribute to this error. Treat DNS as a targeted possibility for that context, not as the explanation for every failed bind.
- Bind timeout: Microsoft documents a default bind timeout of 120 seconds when unset for the particular LDAP client runtime covered by its LDAP ADsPath documentation, along with automatic reconnection behavior. This is not an LDAP-wide timeout; other libraries may differ.
What to collect before changing configuration
- The full, unedited error and any LDAP result code or diagnostic message.
- The client library and version, configured URI, hostname, port, and TLS mode.
- Whether the failure occurs before a session, during TLS negotiation, or after a bind request.
- Relevant client TLS output and directory-server events at the time of failure.
- For LDAPS, certificate identity, validity, private-key availability, chain trust, and whether more than one qualifying server certificate is present.
These observations help isolate the failing layer before a change introduces a second problem. Error meanings, timeout behavior, and security-policy defaults vary by implementation; the cited OpenLDAP and Microsoft examples should be applied only to the relevant products and versions.
