Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If one Home Assistant integration stopped loading, became unavailable, or changed behavior after an update, start with Settings > System > Repairs and Settings > System > Logs. Note the exact error and the Home Assistant version you installed, then check that release’s backward-incompatible changes. The failure may be limited to one integration—particularly a community-maintained one—rather than indicating that all of Home Assistant is broken.
First, identify what stopped working
“Stopped working” can describe several different failures, and the distinction helps narrow the cause. Check whether the integration is absent, setup failed, its entities are unavailable, or an automation or action that uses it is no longer available. Also check whether the Home Assistant interface and other integrations still work.
- One integration is affected: investigate that integration, its configuration, dependencies, and connection first. Home Assistant’s update FAQ says post-update problems usually affect a single integration, especially a community-maintained one.
- Home Assistant cannot start normally: treat this as a broader startup problem and use the recovery-mode guidance below.
Before changing anything, record the Home Assistant version before and after the update, the integration name, whether it is built in or custom, the exact UI error, and when the symptom began. “It happened after an update” is useful timing, but does not identify the cause.
Check Repairs, logs, and release notes
- Open Repairs: go to Settings > System > Repairs and look for a reported issue related to the integration or recent change.
- Read the logs: open Settings > System > Logs and look for entries naming the integration, a configuration option, a dependency, or a failed connection. Capture the exact error rather than paraphrasing it.
- Check breaking changes: read the backward-incompatible changes for the Home Assistant release currently installed. A removed or changed option or action can invalidate configuration. If you upgraded across multiple releases, review the intervening release notes as well.
- Address the specific reported issue: if the log identifies a YAML or configuration problem, correct that issue and validate the configuration where applicable. Restart only if required for the change to take effect.
Home Assistant OS update guidance recommends reviewing every release note between the current and target versions when upgrading across releases. Recovery mode can follow YAML syntax errors, missing include files, changed configuration options, or corrupted configuration storage; use the actual log message to decide what needs correction.

Determine whether the integration is built in or custom
Built-in integration
Check the integration’s official documentation and the log output. Home Assistant says dependencies for official integrations are tested and shipped together. If an official integration reports a dependency error during normal use, report it to Home Assistant with the relevant logs and version details.
Custom integration, including one installed through HACS
Check the integration project’s documentation and issue tracker for compatibility with your newly installed Home Assistant release and for the same error. Custom integrations may take time to catch up with a release, and one custom integration can conflict with another. If the maintainer has published a compatible fix, update the integration using its documented process. A configuration reload is not a remedy for code that is incompatible with the installed Home Assistant version.

Use safe mode to isolate custom components
If the logs and release notes do not reveal the cause, safe mode offers a comparison: Home Assistant starts without custom integrations, custom cards, or themes. If the symptom disappears in safe mode, investigate those components. Safe mode does not identify which component is responsible, and it lasts only until the next restart.
If the whole installation is in recovery mode, inspect the logs for the startup failure and fix the named configuration or integration problem before restarting. Recovery mode loads only a minimal set of system integrations; user integrations, devices, automations, and scripts are not active. It is for recovery, not normal operation.

Collect evidence before asking for help
- Open the integration under Settings > Devices & services.
- Open its three-dot menu and choose the option to enable debug logging.
- Reproduce the problem while debug logging is enabled.
- Return to the integration menu, disable debug logging, and download the resulting log.
- Download integration diagnostics from that menu if the option is available; not every integration provides diagnostics.
When reporting the problem, include the Home Assistant version, the integration version if known, the exact error, steps to reproduce it, and whether safe mode changes the behavior. Remove passwords, tokens, personal information, and other sensitive values before sharing logs or diagnostics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between reload, restart, and restoring a backup
| Action | When it fits | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reload configuration | A configuration change may be the cause, and the affected integration supports reloading. | Often narrower than restarting Home Assistant. Most integrations using configuration.yaml can reload configuration, but a restart may still be needed if the change does not take effect. |
| Restart Home Assistant | A change requires a restart, or the integration’s documented procedure calls for one. | Affects the installation more broadly and interrupts automations and scripts. |
| Update the custom integration | Its maintainer has released a version compatible with the installed Home Assistant release. | Changes the integration code. Follow that project’s documented update process. |
| Restore a pre-update backup | The update has made the system unusable and no prompt fix is available. | Rolls the installation back to the backup state and may omit changes made afterward. Home Assistant’s update FAQ says an automatic backup is taken before each update; make a current backup before other risky changes when practical. |
Reload only when a configuration change is relevant; it will not repair incompatible integration code. Before restoring, consider how much configuration or other data has changed since the backup. Restore procedures depend on the installation and backup context.
