If your Linux system slows down while CPU usage rises, check whether zram activity coincides with the problem—but do not assume zram is the cause from one reading. zram is a RAM-based block device that compresses pages stored on it, and the Linux kernel documentation says, “Pages written to these disks are compressed and stored in memory itself.” That compression and decompression takes CPU work, but the documentation sets no universal CPU percentage or latency threshold that identifies zram as the culprit. Compare zram counters, CPU use, and memory pressure during the slowdown with readings from a normal period.
1. Identify the zram device and capture measurements
Start by recording your Linux distribution and kernel versions, the zram device in use (often named /dev/zram0), and whether the slowdown is constant or intermittent. The kernel’s zram documentation describes the device interfaces, but the exact setup and available features depend on the system.
During a slowdown, note CPU use and memory or swap pressure with the monitoring tools already available on your system. At the same time, read the relevant device counters under /sys/block/zram<id>/, replacing <id> with the device number. Repeat the observations during a normal period, or after the slowdown ends. This comparison is more useful than an isolated snapshot.
mm_stat— memory and page statistics, including original data size, compressed data size, total memory used, memory limits, and other page counters.io_stat— I/O counters, including failed reads, failed writes, invalid I/O, and freed-page notifications.stat— block-layer statistics for the device.bd_stat— backing-device statistics, if backing-device writeback is configured and the interface is present.
You can also inspect the device with zramctl. It is maintained by util-linux, not by the zram maintainers; consult the help or manual installed on your system for options that match your version.

2. Interpret the counters together
Memory use is not the same as disk capacity
In mm_stat, compare original data size, compressed data size, and total memory used. Total memory used is not just the compressed payload: it includes allocator fragmentation and metadata. If a memory limit is configured, compare usage with that limit as well. A zram device’s configured disk size describes its capacity; it does not mean that all of that memory is currently allocated.
Growing stored data, allocation, or I/O can show that the device is active. It does not by itself prove that zram caused a CPU spike. Check whether the changes occur in the same interval as the slowdown, and consider other busy processes and system pressure.

Check for I/O errors or unusual activity
Look at io_stat for failed reads or writes and invalid I/O, and use stat to review block-layer activity. A counter is most useful as a change over time: record it during the symptom and compare it with a baseline rather than treating its absolute value as a diagnosis.
3. Check the compression algorithm and configuration
Read /sys/block/zram<id>/comp_algorithm to see the algorithms available to that device and which one is selected. Support and algorithm-specific parameters vary by kernel build. The kernel documentation does not identify a universally best algorithm for every machine or workload, so do not switch algorithms blindly. If the evidence suggests compression work is relevant, make one supported change at a time and compare the same workload and counters afterward.

4. Determine whether backing-device writeback is configured
zram does not necessarily use storage as a backing device. Writeback is relevant only when the system has configured a backing device and the kernel has the needed support. If bd_stat is present, inspect it alongside the writeback configuration and other zram counters. The kernel documentation describes writeback for idle or incompressible pages and discusses limits on writeback; frequent writes to flash can raise wear concerns. Do not assume this feature is enabled simply because the machine uses zram.
5. Make changes only when observations support them
Keep the comparison meaningful: change one setting at a time, then check CPU use, memory pressure, and the same zram counters under comparable conditions. Algorithm choice, memory limits, and writeback controls are kernel- and system-dependent. Disabling zram or increasing hardware capacity is not a proven fix without evidence about the affected system.

6. Treat a zram reset as disruptive
A reset is not routine diagnostic cleanup. It frees all memory allocated to that zram device and sets its disk size to zero; the disk size must be configured again before the device can be reused. Preserve your observations first, and use your distribution’s service or documented procedure before changing the device.
