Start by retrieving the Checkout Session from your server: Stripe documents complete as a successful payment and open as a failed or canceled payment. For an open session, remount embedded Checkout so the customer can try again. Then inspect the related payment failure details, address authentication or card-data issues, and verify payment server-side before fulfilling an order.
Confirm that you are using embedded Checkout
This guidance applies to Stripe Checkout Sessions integrated with ui_mode: 'embedded_page'. It is distinct from a hosted Checkout page that redirects the customer and from a custom Payment Element integration using Payment Intents.
In embedded Checkout, your server creates the Checkout Session and returns its client secret to the browser for mounting. Keep secret or restricted API keys and sensitive price or inventory data on the server. Stripe also warns against placing Checkout inside another iframe: some payment methods need to redirect to another page for confirmation. See Stripe’s embedded Checkout quickstart.
Check the Checkout Session before diagnosing the interface
On the return page, use the session ID from the return URL to retrieve the current Checkout Session from your server. Use the session status to distinguish a payment outcome from what the browser happened to display.

Follow Stripe’s embedded Checkout return-flow guidance for retrieving the session and rendering the appropriate state.
Find the available decline details
For a card payment, inspect the Stripe Dashboard and API for the related PaymentIntent’s last_payment_error.decline_code and the attempted charge’s failure message, when available. Stripe’s decline guidance and PaymentIntent API reference describe these details.

Common causes include insufficient funds, incorrect card information, and suspected fraud. Issuers may weigh factors such as spending patterns, balance, expiration date, address, and CVC. A generic decline does not establish the precise cause: issuer responses can be limited, and the issuer may share more detail only with the cardholder. Nor does a generic decline by itself indicate a Stripe outage or a Checkout rendering failure.
Choose a recovery action that matches the failure

Stripe’s card decline guidance lists these advice codes and says to follow the advice rather than retry indiscriminately. Stripe gives a maximum of eight retries for charges that permit retries and cautions that additional attempts can be treated as potential fraud. That limit is card-charge guidance, not a universal retry rule for every payment method.

Test decline, retry, and authentication paths
Use Stripe’s test values to reproduce common card outcomes in test mode. The embedded Checkout quickstart lists these examples:

For additional authentication coverage, Stripe’s testing guide includes a 3DS-required decline after authentication and a 3DS lookup or processing error, as well as a 3DS-required success case. Choose the scenario that matches the failure you need to reproduce. Stripe says not to load test against its testing environment because API rate limits apply.

In your own application tests, simulate error responses and verify how your code handles different error codes instead of relying on automated interaction with the protected frontend. Stripe’s automated testing guidance includes this approach; its sample error objects and Payment Element examples should not be treated as an embedded Checkout API implementation.

Do not base business-critical fulfillment solely on a browser callback: the customer can close the page before it runs. Retrieve the Checkout Session and implement server-side event handling that matches your Checkout Sessions integration. Stripe’s embedded Checkout documentation covers the session flow; its Payment Element migration guidance explains why server-side payment events are preferable to client callbacks for critical work, but that page addresses Payment Element and Payment Intents specifically.
