Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with the symptom, make one change at a time, and test the Chromebook again after each step. ChromeOS includes a Diagnostics app for checking Wi-Fi, battery, CPU, and memory; Google says it is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later. Settings names and available features can vary by ChromeOS version and by school or work device policies.
Check Wi-Fi that will not connect or keeps dropping
- Check the basics. Confirm Wi-Fi is on, select the intended network, and verify that you have the right password. If a sign-in page appears for a public or guest network, complete its captive-portal steps. Google’s connection troubleshooting guide recommends testing after each step.
- Run the connectivity checks. Open the Diagnostics app and run its available connectivity checks. The app can help check for Wi-Fi and other hardware or connection problems; its exact tests may depend on your device and ChromeOS version. See Google’s Diagnostics instructions.
- Restart and test again. Restart the Chromebook, reconnect to the expected network, and check whether the problem returns.
- Separate a Chromebook problem from a network problem. If possible, connect the Chromebook to a different Wi-Fi network. Also try another device on the original network. If the Chromebook connects elsewhere but other devices also fail on the original network, the router or network service is a more likely cause. Trying other networks is community troubleshooting advice from a Google Product Expert Alumni, not an official Google support requirement.
- Use Ethernet as an isolation test, if practical. Google recommends testing a wired connection using Ethernet and a compatible USB adapter. If wired access works while Wi-Fi does not, that helps narrow the problem to the wireless connection path; Ethernet does not repair Wi-Fi. Check your Chromebook’s ports and compatibility before choosing an adapter. Google lists supported USB-C Ethernet adapters.
On a school or work Chromebook, network allowlists, sign-in requirements, or administrator policies may prevent access even when the device’s Wi-Fi is working. Ask the network administrator to check those settings if other devices can connect but this Chromebook cannot.
Fix a Chromebook that will not charge or loses battery quickly
If the Chromebook will not charge
- Check that the wall outlet works, then make sure the charger is firmly connected both to the outlet and to the Chromebook.
- Unplug the charger at both ends and reconnect it. Google’s charging troubleshooting steps advise charging for at least 30 minutes before escalating.
- Open Diagnostics and inspect the battery information available on your Chromebook, including battery state, cycle count, electrical current, and discharge test. A very low charge or discharge rate may point to a battery or charging-port problem, but it does not by itself identify which component has failed. Google describes these checks in its Diagnostics guide.
- If the Chromebook still will not charge, contact its manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Choose a replacement charger or battery only after identifying the exact Chromebook model and checking the manufacturer’s compatibility and repair guidance.
If the battery runs down unusually fast
Enable Battery Saver in the battery or power settings if the option is available. Google says Battery Saver can reduce display brightness, turn off the keyboard backlight, enable Chrome Energy Saver or Android Battery Saver, and throttle the CPU. These changes can extend runtime by reducing power use, but may also alter brightness, keyboard lighting, or performance. Feature availability and the setting’s location can vary.
Improve slow performance, freezes, or tabs that reload
- Install available ChromeOS updates. Check for and install updates using the update controls in Settings, then test the Chromebook again. Menu labels can vary across versions.
- Restart and reduce open work. Close unused browser tabs, apps, and windows. If the Chromebook freezes or crashes, Google’s troubleshooting guidance starts with restarting and closing apps and browser windows.
- Look for resource pressure. Open Diagnostics and review the CPU graph to see which applications are using CPU. A CPU stress test is not a useful first step for everyday slowness: the test itself can make the Chromebook slow while it runs. Diagnostics can also check memory and CPU; consult Google’s guide to using the app.
- Check extensions when browser symptoms point to them. If tabs keep reloading or the browser slows down, press Shift + Esc to open Chrome’s Task Manager and inspect active tabs and extensions. Close unneeded tabs and disable extensions you do not use. If freezes began after you installed an app or extension, remove it and test again.
- Escalate persistent hardware symptoms. If Diagnostics reports a failed memory or CPU test, or the device continues to show hardware problems after these steps, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
When to reset—and how to protect your files
A factory reset is a later step, not a first response to Wi-Fi, charging, or slowness. It erases local user data, including files in Downloads. Before resetting, back up or sync files you need and try the less disruptive steps for the affected symptom. Google’s reset guidance explains the process. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, contact its administrator before resetting. Recovery is more severe and can also erase local files; use it only when Google’s troubleshooting sequence calls for it, after backing up what you can.
