The steps differ for mods installed through the in-game Mod Manager and third-party PC mods, so identify which setup you use before removing files.
Start by identifying the problem and game version
Before changing files, record the platform, game version or build, mod manager, and source of each affected mod. Note what fails: launching, loading a save, the UI, textures or shaders, character appearance, or multiplayer. Larian lists all of these as possible mod-related symptoms in its Mod Issues support guide.

Check the current game version in your launcher or in-game, then compare it with the mod author’s latest release and compatibility notes. A mod that worked before an update is not necessarily compatible with the new build. Larian’s latest update listed here is Hotfix #36, released March 26, 2026, for version 4.1.1.7209685. Patch 8 was announced as the final major content update, but Larian said minor bug-fixing updates would continue; that does not guarantee existing mods will keep working.
Update and isolate in-game supported mods
- Open the in-game Mod Manager. Go to Installed and check whether an Update button appears for a mod. Update it if available, then read its description for dependencies or required settings. Larian’s Official Mod Support guide explains the update and compatibility workflow.
- Disable mods and retest. Uncheck the installed mods, then try the same action that failed. If the problem stops, a mod or interaction between mods is likely involved. Re-enable mods in a controlled way to narrow down which one triggers the symptom.
- Contact the mod author if the issue follows a mod. Use the mod listing to describe the symptom and include your game version. Larian says player-created mods are managed by their authors, not directly fixed by Larian.
- Report a problem that persists without mods. If the same failure occurs with mods disabled, report it to Larian as a possible base-game issue.
Check third-party PC mods and leftover files
Third-party mods can leave files in both the game installation and your local profile. Larian advises removing existing mod files when launch or in-game problems occur. Back up saves and any configuration you want to keep before deleting anything; cleanup may require rebuilding your mod setup.

Datafolder, check forModsandPublicfolders. Larian says these folders, if present, are safe to delete when troubleshooting. - Check
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Modsfor third-party mod files. - If you are using an old profile rather than a new one for the current patch, Larian says you may also delete
modsettings.lsx.
Do not assume the Documents folder is the active location. Larian says the game uses local AppData rather than Documents. However, if the game’s AppData folder does not exist and an older game folder does exist in Documents, the game may copy old profiles and configuration into AppData when it starts, bringing old mod files along.
Review the launcher’s altered-files log
If the launcher reports a data mismatch, it creates a log of unexpected files in the installation or Mods folder. Look in %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache for steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt, or a corresponding galaxy_... file for GOG. Use the listed paths to identify unexpected files before removing them.
Refresh and export load order in BG3 Mod Manager
If you use LaughingLeader’s third-party BG3 Mod Manager, arranging mods in the application is not enough: you must export the active order to the game’s modsettings.lsx.
- Run the game once so it creates its folders and a profile.
- If needed, refresh campaign mod data in BG3 Mod Manager.
- Select the Public profile and arrange the active mods.
- Choose Export Load Order to Game.
Keep the Mods directory free of subfolders. The manager’s maintainer warns that subfolders can cause the game to reset modsettings.lsx. If the order resets on launch, an erroring mod may be responsible; isolate it by disabling mods and testing again.

Make multiplayer mod lists match
Every player in a multiplayer session needs the same mods at the same versions. When the verification window appears, it may offer options to download, enable, update, or downgrade mods to match the save or session. Check the mod list and versions on every player’s installation before troubleshooting connection or save problems. Larian describes this matching process in its Community Update #29 and Official Mod Support guide.

For a third-party launch problem that remains after checking compatibility and cleaning up leftover files, review the altered-files log and contact Larian support if needed. For a failure that disappears when a particular mod is disabled, contact that mod’s author with the game build and symptom.
