Then check the update status, available storage, Wi-Fi and battery before retrying. A failed download is not the same as an update that has installed in the background and is waiting for a restart.
Check whether your Pixel is eligible and the update is available
- Open Settings > System > Software update.
- Read the status and follow any instructions shown on screen.
- Check your exact Pixel model against Google’s current Pixel update support list.
Google releases Pixel updates gradually, with availability varying by device and carrier. Google says an update may take a few weeks to reach a device. If your model is supported and Settings shows no update yet, waiting and checking again is appropriate; the delay alone does not mean the phone is broken. Google’s update guidance explains the rollout and status checks.
How long Pixel models receive updates
Google’s current policy page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates, while listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation devices receive five years. These periods begin when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier models as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Because support depends on the exact model, use the live device list rather than applying a generation rule to every phone.
Prepare the phone before retrying
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Google recommends Wi-Fi for updating.
- Charge to at least 75%. This is Google’s preparation recommendation, not a guarantee that an update will succeed.
Google’s Android Help notes that “Older devices can’t always run newer Android versions.” If your model is outside its support period, troubleshooting a download will not make a newer Android version available. Google’s Android update instructions cover update preparation.

Free internal storage if the update reports a space problem
- Open Settings > Storage and review available internal storage.
- Remove files you no longer need, review backed-up media, or uninstall unused apps.
- Retry the update after making space.
Google says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. This is a troubleshooting threshold, not a promise that a particular amount of free space will be enough for every update; Google does not specify a universal space requirement. See Google’s storage guidance.
If considering app cleanup, distinguish clearing cache from clearing storage. Cache is temporary data; clearing an app’s storage permanently deletes that app’s data. Google explains the difference in its app storage and cache instructions. Avoid clearing app storage unless you understand what that app may lose.

Tell a stalled download apart from a pending restart
If the download does not finish
Follow the status shown under Settings > System > Software update. Google says a Pixel will automatically try again over the next few days if an update download does not complete, and will notify you. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and allow that retry rather than repeatedly interrupting the process.
If the update downloaded but is not active
Pixel installs a downloaded update in the background. The new software becomes active after the phone restarts, so restart when prompted or when the update status indicates installation is ready. Google describes this background installation and restart behavior in its Pixel update instructions.
If the update still fails
Return to the update screen and note the exact error message, your Pixel model, and whether the failure happens during download or after installation begins. Google’s general guidance does not establish one universal fix for every error code or carrier-specific issue. Use the on-screen instructions and provide the model and exact message when seeking device-specific help. A factory reset is not a routine first step in the guidance cited here.
