If your Airtel India number stops working abroad, first check that international roaming is active on your account and that your destination is covered. Then restart the phone and register on a supported network. After that, troubleshoot calls, SMS or mobile data separately: the right fix depends on which service is failing, your Airtel plan, destination and phone settings.
1. Check Airtel roaming service and account eligibility
Airtel International Roaming (IR) service and an IR pack are separate. A phone may fail abroad because the account is not eligible or roaming service is inactive, even when its settings are correct. Airtel’s published IR terms describe different conditions for prepaid and postpaid accounts:
- Prepaid: The terms describe activation routes that include an IR pack or a ₹118 service activation option. For the ₹118 option, an active prepaid plan and sufficient main balance for chargeable use are required. Confirm that these conditions and the current price still apply to your account.
- Postpaid: Airtel says customers may enable IR service without buying a pack, but standard charges apply when using roaming without one.
Buying an IR pack or an in-flight pack can also enable the service, according to Airtel’s terms. Check the Airtel App or current terms to confirm your service status, plan entitlement, validity and any applicable charges before using roaming.
2. Fix no service or a phone that will not register
If the phone shows “No service,” “Searching,” or cannot connect to a network, begin with the registration steps Airtel recommends in its roaming FAQ. A partner network that works in one country—or for another account—may not be available to your number at your destination.

- After landing, restart the phone and give it time to connect.
- If it still has no service, open the phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings and switch network selection from automatic to manual. Wait for the available networks to appear, then try another listed network that Airtel supports at your destination.
- If none connects, return network selection to automatic. Move to an open area with better reception and try again; Airtel’s roaming troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying another network or moving for better reception.
Setting names vary by phone and operating system, and the available partner networks vary by destination. If no listed network accepts the SIM, ask Airtel to check your account provisioning and which networks are supported where you are.
3. If calls do not work
Once the phone is registered on a network, check whether the account and destination support the call you are trying to make. Airtel recommends checking the device’s roaming and international-dialing settings when calls fail.

- Confirm that IR service is active and that your account or pack supports calls in the country you are visiting.
- Check the phone’s cellular settings for roaming-related options and confirm international dialing is enabled where the device provides that setting.
- Restart the phone. You can also turn airplane mode on briefly, turn it off, and allow the phone to reconnect.
If calls still fail, note whether incoming calls, outgoing calls or both are affected. That distinction can help Airtel identify an account, destination or dialing issue.
4. If SMS or texts do not work
For SMS failures, confirm that IR service is active and check the phone’s roaming state. Airtel’s general guidance also recommends restarting or toggling airplane mode to restore connectivity.

- Try sending a new SMS after the phone reconnects to its roaming network.
- If texts still fail, contact Airtel and ask it to check service provisioning and support for your destination.
Do not assume that a working data connection proves SMS service is provisioned: they are distinct services and may be affected differently by the account or destination.
5. If mobile data does not work
Check account entitlement before changing advanced phone settings. Airtel says data may be blocked in countries not covered by an IR plan, while voice and SMS may be charged at standard rates in countries outside a pack’s coverage. - Confirm in the Airtel App or with Airtel that your account or pack includes data in the country you are visiting and that it remains valid.
- In your phone’s cellular settings, enable data roaming for the Airtel SIM. On dual-SIM phones, also confirm Airtel is selected for mobile data.
- Check that the Airtel APN is configured as Airtel instructs for your device and account. Airtel’s general troubleshooting page does not specify a universal APN value, so do not enter a guessed value; ask Airtel for the correct configuration if needed.
- Reconnect by restarting the phone or briefly toggling airplane mode, then try data again.
If calls and texts work but data does not, country coverage, pack entitlement, the data-roaming toggle and APN are the most relevant checks. A data failure alone does not establish that the phone is defective.

Its activation guidance lists +91-99100-99100 for support outside India and 121 for calls in India. Check the live Airtel page for current contact options before calling.
