Yes. Start by recording the exact PHP warning and the return value, then check the required From header, identify the mail transport PHP is configured to use, and inspect PHP and mail-server logs. A true result means the configured transport accepted the message for delivery; it does not prove the recipient received it.
First, identify which stage is failing
PHP’s mail() function returns true when the message was accepted for delivery and false otherwise. Acceptance is not confirmation that the message reached its destination or inbox. If the function returns true but no one receives the email, investigate the mail transport and delivery path rather than treating that result as proof of successful delivery. PHP’s mail() manual explains this distinction.
Capture the exact warning or error text as well as the return value. “Mail error” alone does not identify a cause: the relevant fix depends on the PHP version, operating system, hosting environment, and transport configuration.
Check the required sender header and message formatting
PHP requires a From header. It can be supplied in additional_headers or configured as a default; a missing sender header can produce a warning. Check that it is present and valid before changing server settings.

Review recipient and subject formatting, header structure, and line endings. If any header value comes from user input, sanitize it so that input cannot introduce unintended headers. PHP documents CRLF line endings and recommends keeping message lines no longer than 70 characters. Its LF-only workaround is a last resort for certain Unix mail transfer agents (MTAs), not the standards-compliant first fix. See the PHP mail() manual for the formatting requirements.
Find out which mail transport PHP is using
Check the effective settings for the PHP runtime that executes the script. A command-line PHP configuration may differ from the configuration used by a web server or hosted runtime, so inspect the environment where the failing code actually runs.

Unix-like systems
PHP commonly submits mail through the command configured in sendmail_path. Confirm that the path points to an available, configured sendmail-compatible command. A configured path that does not exist or cannot submit mail is one possible cause, not a diagnosis without checking the actual environment.
Windows
On Windows, PHP uses SMTP, smtp_port, and sendmail_from only when sendmail_path is not set. If sendmail_path is set, PHP runs that command and ignores those SMTP settings. Check which branch applies before changing values. The PHP mail configuration manual documents these settings.

Use logs to pinpoint the failure
PHP’s mail.log setting can record calls, including the script path, line number, recipient, and headers. Enable or inspect it in the relevant PHP configuration, then look at the configured mail transport’s own logs. PHP-level acceptance or logging cannot establish final delivery, so server and delivery logs matter when the call appears successful but the message is missing. If the exact warning and available logs point to an absent local mail server or an incorrect sendmail_path, investigate that configuration. These are examples of possible problems; they do not establish that either is the cause in a particular setup. PHPMailer’s troubleshooting guidance discusses them as possible causes.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the evidence: note the exact warning or error text and whether
mail()returnedtrueorfalse. - Verify the message: confirm that a valid
Fromheader is present, user-sourced header values are sanitized, and recipient, subject, and line endings are correctly formatted. - Identify the runtime: note the operating system, PHP version, web server or runtime, and whether the code runs locally or on a hosted server.
- Check the active transport: on Unix-like systems, verify
sendmail_pathand the command it names. On Windows, check whethersendmail_pathis set before relying onSMTP,smtp_port, orsendmail_from. - Inspect logs: check PHP’s
mail.log, if available, and the transport or server logs. Use the actual warning and log entry to decide what to investigate next. - Trace accepted mail downstream: if PHP returns
truebut the recipient does not receive the message, investigate the mail server and delivery path rather than assuming the PHP call failed.
When to consider a different mail-sending approach
If diagnosis shows that the server has no suitable mail transport, a transactional email service or authenticated SMTP may be an option. That is a change in approach, not a universal fix for a mail() warning; first establish whether the failure is in PHP configuration, the local transport, message formatting, or downstream delivery.
