If an unsupported Intel Mac stops starting after an OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) or macOS update, first identify where startup fails. A Mac that never reaches OpenCore needs a different fix from one that reaches the desktop but has lost Wi-Fi or graphics acceleration. Start by selecting OpenCore correctly, then follow the branch that matches what you see.

First, identify where startup stops

Before changing anything, note the Mac model, macOS version, OCLP version if known, the last action you took, and the exact screen or symbol displayed. In particular, distinguish an OCLP app or bootloader update from root patching and from a macOS update.

  • Before the OpenCore picker: The Mac may not be loading its OpenCore boot entry.
  • At the installer or Recovery picker: The needed entry may be hidden or the installer may not be starting correctly.
  • After macOS begins loading: A prohibited symbol or a boot hang may point to an installer or system issue.
  • At the desktop, but hardware is missing: The Mac has booted; root patches may need to be installed again.

OCLP’s troubleshooting guide groups recovery by symptoms, so use the matching instructions rather than applying a boot fix to every failure: OCLP troubleshooting.

Choose OpenCore before macOS or the installer

On restart, hold Option to open the Mac’s boot picker. Select the EFI Boot entry for OpenCore first. When the OpenCore picker appears, select the macOS volume or installer there. OCLP documents this as a two-stage boot selection: OCLP booting guide.

If you select the macOS installer directly from the Mac’s boot picker, an unsupported Mac can show a prohibited symbol because it did not start through OpenCore. If the Mac cannot boot macOS without the USB installer, check OCLP’s troubleshooting guidance for that specific symptom rather than assuming the internal OpenCore installation is working.

Open Recovery through OpenCore

On an unsupported Mac, the regular Command-R startup route may show a prohibited symbol. Instead, start OpenCore, then use its picker to choose Recovery. If Recovery is not visible, press Space in the OpenCore picker to reveal hidden boot entries, including Recovery, and choose the entry for the relevant macOS version. Follow OCLP’s Recovery boot instructions.

If a prohibited symbol appears, check when it appears

The timing helps distinguish a boot-selection problem from a possible installer-media problem. If the prohibited symbol appears before macOS starts loading, confirm that you chose EFI Boot/OpenCore before the installer. If it appears after startup has already begun, OCLP says the USB installer may have failed macOS integrity checks and recommends creating a fresh installer on a different USB drive, preferably a different model. This is one possible cause, not proof that the USB is responsible for every startup failure.

OCLP’s installer guide explains how to create installer media and its current requirements. Check that guide before rebuilding the installer; the troubleshooting advice does not establish that every affected Mac needs a new drive.

If the failure followed root patching

OCLP’s snapshot-reversion procedure for a Mac stuck after root patching applies to macOS Monterey and newer. It does not apply to Big Sur, which does not support the documented snapshot reversion. If the Mac runs Monterey or later, follow OCLP’s “Stuck on boot after root patching” instructions from Recovery started through OpenCore.

The documented recovery involves reverting to the last sealed snapshot and removing offending extensions. Do not guess or copy shell commands from another Mac: the instructions warn that the system volume may not be named Macintosh HD, and FileVault users must mount the Data volume first. Inspect the mounted volumes and follow the exact procedure for the Mac’s setup. If the guide does not match the Mac or its volume layout, stop rather than improvising commands against the system or Data volume.

If macOS reaches the desktop but hardware features are missing

A Mac that starts successfully but has lost functions such as graphics acceleration, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Touch Bar or T1 support, camera, or USB support may need OCLP root patches—not boot repair. OCLP explains that root patches restore some unsupported hardware functions and that macOS updates can wipe them by modifying the sealed system volume. Its post-install guide and update guide cover reinstalling patches after an update.

OCLP’s background process can monitor patch status and prompt you when patches are missing. If no prompt appears, or that process is disabled, open OCLP and install the appropriate root patches manually, following its instructions for your macOS and OCLP versions: OCLP background process.

Legacy USB 1.1 input-device exception

Some older Mac families with legacy USB 1.1 controllers may need a USB hub to connect input devices during installation or after an update, until root patches restore the relevant drivers. OCLP lists the affected model families in its USB troubleshooting guidance. This is a model-specific input-device workaround, not a general fix for a Mac that will not boot.

Reduce the chance of another update failure

OCLP recommends updating the patcher and rebuilding OpenCore on the internal disk before updating macOS. Its update guide distinguishes major upgrades from minor updates:

  • For a major macOS upgrade: Follow OCLP’s current upgrade procedure, which uses an OCLP-created USB installer, and reinstall root patches afterward.
  • For a minor macOS update: Update OCLP and rebuild OpenCore on the internal disk first, then start the macOS update from System Settings and reinstall root patches afterward.

Use the OCLP update guide for the exact flow that matches your macOS and OCLP versions. OCLP’s FAQ explains why patches can need reinstalling after an update: macOS changes the sealed system volume.
