Run TRIM on an SSD in Windows 10
- Click the taskbar search box and type defrag.
- Open Defragment and Optimize Drives from the search results.
- Select your SSD from the drive list.
- Click Optimize and let the operation finish. Microsoft does not specify a standard completion time; it can vary by drive and circumstances.
Windows provides this built-in tool for drive optimization. You do not need a third-party defragmenter or optimizer to perform the operation.
What TRIM does—and how it differs from defragmenting
In the Optimize Drives tool, Windows trims SSDs and defragments hard disk drives (HDDs). TRIM informs an SSD which areas can be safely cleaned up when the drive is not busy with other work. Defragmentation, by contrast, reorganizes files on a hard drive. The tool serves both drive types, so select the SSD before choosing Optimize. Microsoft explains the distinction and the Optimize Drives controls.
Check the automatic optimization schedule
Windows generally optimizes data drives automatically. Microsoft says the default schedule is once a week. To review or change it, open Defragment and Optimize Drives and choose Change Settings under Scheduled optimization. The available schedule choices are daily, weekly, monthly, or off. Microsoft also describes SSD optimization as TRIM in Storage settings in Windows.

Do not confuse TRIM with Storage Spaces optimization
Windows Storage Spaces has a separate Optimize drive usage feature. It redistributes data in a storage pool when drives are added; it is not the SSD TRIM operation described above. See Microsoft’s Storage Spaces documentation for that feature.
