Chrome, Firefox, and Edge can translate a foreign-language webpage without requiring you to copy its text into a separate service. Chrome uses Google Translate, Firefox processes translations on your device after the required language packs are installed, and Edge uses Microsoft Translator.
Follow the browser-specific steps below to translate a full page or selected text, change translation settings, and troubleshoot a missing translation control.

The option to display Chrome in a particular language is available only on Windows. On macOS and Linux, Chrome’s interface follows the operating system’s default language.
Use Google Translate if Chrome’s control is missing
- Open translate.google.com.
- Select Websites at the top.
- Enter or paste the webpage URL.
- Open the translated result.
Translate a webpage in Chrome on iPhone or iPad

- To set a default target language, select Settings → More languages.
- To always translate pages from a source language, select Settings → Always translate [language].
If Chrome does not offer translation, reload the page. If Translate remains unavailable, the language may not be supported.

Skip or suppress translation prompts

Choosing Never translate [Language] does not prevent manual translation. You can still select the address-bar Translate icon and translate a page.
Translate manually when Edge does not prompt
- Select the Translate icon in the address bar.
- Choose a language from Translate to.
- Select Translate.
To restore the original page, select the Translate icon and choose Show original.
Turn Edge translation prompts on or off
Go to Settings and more → Settings → Languages. Enable or disable Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read.
Edge compares the detected page language with the browser’s Preferred languages list. To change that list, go to Settings and more → Settings → Languages → Preferred languages → Add languages.
Use Reading mode as an alternative
On supported pages, Edge’s Reading mode has a separate translation control. Enable it through Settings and more → Settings → Appearance → Toolbar → Reading mode. Open the page in Reading mode, then select Translate in its toolbar. Microsoft says this route offers more than 70 language options.

Check the Edge version
Webpage translation requires Microsoft Edge version 136 or later. Microsoft states that translation stopped working on versions earlier than 136 after July 30, 2026. If the Translate icon is missing, update Edge to version 136 or later before troubleshooting language settings.

| Chrome | Yes | Yes | Google Translate |
| Firefox | Yes | Yes | On-device translation after language packs are installed |

What to do when the Translate button is missing
- Refresh the page. The page may not have been detected correctly on its first load.
- Check the detected language. A browser may not show the control if it thinks the page is already in a language you read.
- Review language settings. In Chrome, check Settings → Languages. In Edge, check Settings → Languages and the Preferred languages list. In Firefox, check Settings → AI Controls and confirm translations are not blocked.
- Try the page context menu. Chrome and Firefox provide right-click translation commands.
- Check language support. The browser may not support translation for the page’s language.
- Check page content limitations. Text inside an image or video is not ordinary webpage text and may not be translated by the browser.
- Update the browser. Edge webpage translation requires version 136 or later.
Translation accuracy and privacy
Automatic translation is useful for understanding a page, but it is not a substitute for a professional translation of legal, medical, financial, or contractual wording. Names, measurements, idioms, product names, and technical terms can be mistranslated, so check the original before making an important decision.
Firefox processes webpage translation locally after its language packs are installed. Chrome uses Google Translate, while Edge uses Microsoft Translator. Avoid entering confidential information into an external translation service unless you understand how it handles submitted content.
FAQ
Why does Chrome not show the Translate button?
Refresh the page, then try right-clicking it and selecting Translate to [Language]. Check More → Settings → Languages and make sure Use Google Translate is enabled. The detected language may also be unsupported or already included among your preferred languages.
Does Firefox have built-in webpage translation?
Yes. Firefox introduced built-in webpage translation in version 118. It translates locally on the device after the necessary language packs are installed.
Can I translate only part of a webpage?
Chrome and Firefox support selected-text translation. Highlight the text, right-click it, and select Chrome’s Translate selection to [Language] or Firefox’s Translate selection to [your language]. Edge’s current built-in translation documentation describes full-page translation rather than a standard selected-text command.
How do I stop Edge from translating a language?
When the translation panel appears, select Never translate [Language]. To change general prompt behavior, go to Settings and more → Settings → Languages and turn off Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read.
Can browser translation translate text in an image?
Normally, no. Browser webpage translation works with text exposed as webpage content. Text embedded in images or videos is not translated by Firefox’s built-in webpage translation and may require a separate optical character recognition or visual-translation tool.
