Microsoft Edge’s documented translation tools are for webpages, not a built-in workflow for translating a PDF and saving a translated PDF copy. Edge can open PDFs, but Microsoft’s PDF support page does not document translating their contents or exporting a translated copy. For a file translation, Microsoft documents a separate whole-document translation feature in Word; its support instructions do not explain how to convert a PDF into that workflow or export the result as a PDF.
Can Microsoft Edge translate a PDF itself?
Microsoft’s Edge Translator instructions cover webpages: Edge can prompt to translate a page, let you choose a language, and restore the original. Its PDF support documentation confirms that Edge opens PDFs, but does not describe translating a PDF or saving a translated PDF copy. That distinction matters: viewing a PDF in Edge is not the same as translating its text.
This conclusion is limited to the Microsoft documentation cited here. It does not rule out a staged, platform-specific, or region-limited feature that is not covered by those pages.

Translate a webpage in Edge
If the material is a webpage rather than a PDF, Edge’s documented Translator feature may help. Microsoft says Edge automatically prompts when a page is written in a language different from the preferred languages in settings.
- Open the webpage in Edge. When the translation prompt appears, choose the target language and select Translate.
- To return to the source-language page, open the translate icon and select Show original.
If the prompt does not appear, check Settings > Languages and whether Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read is enabled. This setting applies to webpages; it does not establish PDF translation support. Language and connected-experience settings may vary based on user settings, device management, and region. See Microsoft’s Manage Connected Experiences in Microsoft Edge.

Use Reading mode for a supported webpage
Edge Reading mode also offers translation for supported webpages. Use the Reading mode toolbar to select a language; Microsoft says it offers more than 70 language options. This is a webpage reading feature, not a documented way to translate a PDF or create an exportable translated file. See Microsoft’s Reading mode instructions.
Translate a document with Word
Microsoft documents a whole-document translation feature in Word that opens a translated copy in a separate window. It is a distinct Office workflow, not a set of Edge PDF commands.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the translated document before relying on it
If you convert or otherwise move PDF content into a document workflow, inspect the result carefully before sharing or using it. Pay particular attention to tables, page breaks, scanned pages, and text accuracy. These checks are practical safeguards; the cited Microsoft instructions do not guarantee that PDF layout will be preserved through conversion and translation.
