To move to a Google Pixel, use Google’s device-transfer flow for general data, then check WhatsApp and complete its chat transfer or restore separately. The steps depend on whether your old phone is Android or iPhone and, for transfers after setup, whether your Pixel is a Pixel 9 or later. Back up the old phone and WhatsApp first, keep both phones charged, and use a compatible cable or reliable Wi-Fi.
Before you start
Back up your old phone before setting up the Pixel. WhatsApp also needs its own chat backup; a general device backup or data copy does not guarantee that WhatsApp history will be restored. Google’s Pixel setup preparation guidance calls out third-party app data such as WhatsApp chats.
- Have both phones, their screen-lock PINs, and access to the accounts used for backups ready.
- Charge both phones and connect them to strong Wi-Fi. A cable can be useful, particularly if Wi-Fi is weak, but is not required for every transfer.
- Check that the Pixel has enough free storage. Google says a transfer can pause if the Pixel runs out of space.
- Allow time for apps to download after the copy. Some app data, especially manufacturer-specific data, may not transfer.
For WhatsApp, identify the number and account associated with the old phone’s chat backup. If you intend to use a new phone number, change the number in WhatsApp on the old phone before transferring; a transfer to a different number as-is is not supported by Google’s Android WhatsApp transfer instructions.

Google’s Pixel data-transfer guide documents the generation-specific setup flows. The exact supported categories vary; copying contacts, photos, texts, apps, or other data does not mean every app’s private data will come along.

Transfer general data from Android to Pixel
Start the copy during Pixel setup if you can. For Pixel 8 and later, Google describes a wireless pairing process using a QR code, as well as a wired option connecting the phones by USB-C. Older Pixel instructions include cable and Wi-Fi routes; follow the prompts shown for your model rather than assuming the same screen sequence applies to every generation.
- Turn on the Pixel and begin setup. Choose the option to copy data from an old device.
- On the old Android phone, follow the pairing prompts. If using the Pixel 8-or-later wireless flow, scan the QR code shown on the Pixel.
- For a wired transfer, connect the phones using a compatible data cable, then follow the on-screen instructions. Choose all supported data or select the categories you want.
- Keep the phones connected and follow any prompts to approve access. Wait for the copy to finish, then check key items and open WhatsApp separately.
Google’s transfer table lists WhatsApp chat history among supported Android-to-Pixel categories, but WhatsApp provides separate backup and restore steps. Verify the chats and media in WhatsApp rather than treating the general device-copy completion screen as confirmation that its history is complete.

Transfer general data from iPhone to Pixel
Google’s iPhone-to-Pixel flow can copy selected categories such as texts, photos, music, contacts, apps, and calendars. Only photos stored locally on the iPhone are included in the device copy. For photos held in iCloud, Google points to Google Photos sync or Apple’s iCloud migration tool instead. Google also recommends turning off iMessage and FaceTime before transferring.
- Begin Pixel setup and choose to copy data from an iPhone or iPad.
- Connect the phones using a compatible cable when the setup flow requests it. Newer iPhones and Android devices can use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. For older iPhones, Google describes Lightning-cable arrangements, including a Quick Switch Adapter in one configuration; confirm the ports and instructions for your specific devices.
- Choose the data categories to copy and approve the prompts on both phones. If asked, tap Trust on the iPhone and enter its passcode.
- Keep the phones connected until the copy is complete, then check the transferred categories on the Pixel.

Move WhatsApp chats from Android
Use WhatsApp on the old Android phone to make a chat backup before starting. On the Pixel, sign in with the same phone number. WhatsApp then offers a direct transfer over Wi-Fi or a restore from backup; Google recommends cloud restore when an updated cloud backup is available.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up.
- Install WhatsApp on the Pixel if it did not arrive with the app copy.
- Open WhatsApp on the Pixel and verify the same phone number used on the old phone.
- When prompted, choose Transfer from old phone for a Wi-Fi transfer or Restore from backup to use the cloud backup. If you use multiple Google Accounts, make sure the account associated with the backup is available on both phones.
- After the process completes, inspect your chats and media. Older images may take time to appear; Google advises contacting WhatsApp support if they are still missing after 24 hours.
If WhatsApp does not find a backup, check that the Pixel has the same Google Account as the backup and that backup was enabled and ran on the old phone. If messages are missing, check the old phone’s last backup date. Clearing WhatsApp app data to try the restore again can erase newer messages received on the Pixel, so first save anything you need from the new phone.

Move WhatsApp chats from iPhone
For iPhone-to-Pixel WhatsApp transfer, Google requires the old iPhone’s charging cable, a Google Account to download WhatsApp, and the same phone number on both phones. The supported flow uses a QR code and the WhatsApp app on the iPhone. If possible, do this before using WhatsApp on the Pixel: restoring the old history replaces new history created on the Pixel, and the histories cannot be merged.
During initial Pixel setup
- Choose Copy from iPhone or iPad during Pixel setup and connect the phones with the iPhone’s cable.
- Include Apps among the selected data, then scan the QR code displayed on the Pixel.
- On the iPhone, tap Start transfer in WhatsApp and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Only after it completes, sign in to WhatsApp on the Pixel using the same phone number.
After setup, using the QR-guided route
Google says the QR-code device-copy route itself does not copy WhatsApp chats. Its documented post-setup route is available through Settings → Accounts and backup → Android Switch → Transfer WhatsApp chats. Connect the iPhone by cable, tap Trust on the iPhone, enter its PIN to allow access, scan the displayed QR code, and follow WhatsApp’s instructions. Wait for the transfer to finish before signing in on Android.

If Pixel setup is already finished
Pixel 9 and later can add data after initial setup without a factory reset, according to Google’s post-setup transfer guidance. Google also documents restoring device data from a cloud backup during setup and, on Pixel 9 and later, after setup. Availability and steps depend on the Pixel model and the transfer route.
If the old phone is unavailable, restoring from a Google device backup depends on an existing backup. That backup is not the same thing as a WhatsApp-specific backup: WhatsApp chat restoration still depends on WhatsApp’s backup or supported transfer process. For iPhone-to-Pixel WhatsApp transfer, use the iPhone and cable-based steps above when available; do not assume the general device restore includes the chat history.

Important limits and recovery points
- Chat histories do not merge. Restoring old WhatsApp history replaces history created on the Pixel.
- Transfer success is not guaranteed. Google says to contact WhatsApp support about transfer concerns. WhatsApp does not support other migration apps, which can cause migration issues.
- Missing media may still be downloading. If images remain absent after 24 hours, Google recommends contacting WhatsApp support.
- A full Pixel can interrupt the copy. Check available storage before restarting a transfer.
- Cables are device-specific. USB-C is useful but optional overall; confirm both phones’ ports and follow Google’s applicable instructions before buying or choosing a cable or adapter.
